A mental cutting test on female students using a stereographic system.
The article focuses on basic information about fractals in a popular way. It brings about a way to provide glimpses of the theory of fractals for pupils at the primary and secondary schools. A strictly geometrical definition of fractals is given together with three examples of fractals (Cantor discontinuum, Koch snowflake, Sierpinski triangle). Next two other definitions of fractals are presented. The main part of the article consists of the examples of fractals in biology and in arts which can...
The article focuses on real life problems which are published in the American journal Mathematics Teacher and which are based on up-to-date news from media. Two topics are presented - and . The former concerns the haeviest and biggest limousine in the world and its different measures and properties. Nine related tasks are formulated. The latter concerns a custom from Cambodia in which monks marry two snakes. This time five short problems are formulated. Results of the tasks are provided.
The article concerns different ways of the construction of the ellipse, both in technical practice and in mathematics. The author suggest that the concept of oval is used in primary mathematics which would be appropriate for practising geometric constructions. Five problems are given in the article.
In our textbooks the proof of the volume of the pyramid is erroneous. The solution of this problem is demonstrated in connection to our school practice.
Readers are invited to write about problems connected with mathematics education. We give here space for discussion about different didactical problems, which are of your interest.
The article looks into the question whether the article is a special case of a rectangle (as the Czech textbooks of the primary school use such a definition of a rectangle that a square is not its special case). The author considers mathematical, didactic and psychological aspects of the situation of defining a rectangle. The possible definitions of other geometric shapes are discussed. Finally, some tasks are given which come from the era of New Maths for readers to solve.
First, the contribution describes the most significant turning points of the gradual development of recognition in knot theory, then it provides examples of the use of classical knots in history, mentions some pictorial forms of motivation for the inclusion of knot theory in teaching mathematics, presents basic concepts of knot theory suitable for mathematics teaching in the lower years of 8-year secondary grammar school and offers a set of simple tasks in this interesting field of mathematics which...
