Characters of finite quasigroups VII: permutation characters

Kenneth Walter Johnson, Jonathan D. H. Smith (2004)

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

Each homogeneous space of a quasigroup affords a representation of the Bose-Mesner algebra of the association scheme given by the action of the multiplication group. The homogeneous space is said to be faithful if the corresponding representation of the Bose-Mesner algebra is faithful. In the group case, this definition agrees with the usual concept of faithfulness for transitive permutation representations. A permutation character is associated with each quasigroup permutation representation,...

Charles Hermite’s stroll through the Galois fields

Catherine Goldstein (2011)

Revue d'histoire des mathématiques

Although everything seems to oppose the two mathematicians, Charles Hermite’s role was crucial in the study and diffusion of Évariste Galois’s results in France during the second half of the nineteenth century. The present article examines that part of Hermite’s work explicitly linked to Galois, the reduction of modular equations in particular. It shows how Hermite’s mathematical convictions—concerning effectiveness or the unity of algebra, analysis and arithmetic—shaped his interpretation of Galois...

Chern classes of reductive groups and an adjunction formula

Valentina Kiritchenko (2006)

Annales de l’institut Fourier

In this paper, I construct noncompact analogs of the Chern classes for equivariant vector bundles over complex reductive groups. For the tangent bundle, these Chern classes yield an adjunction formula for the (topological) Euler characteristic of complete intersections in reductive groups. In the case where a complete intersection is a curve, this formula gives an explicit answer for the Euler characteristic and the genus of the curve. I also prove that the higher Chern classes vanish. The first...
