Construction of compact constant mean curvature hypersurfaces with topology

Mohamed Jleli (2012)

Annales de l’institut Fourier

In this paper, we explain how the end-to-end construction together with the moduli space theory can be used to produce compact constant mean curvature hypersurfaces with nontrivial topology. For the sake of simplicity, the hypersurfaces we construct have a large group of symmetry but the method can certainly be used to provide many more examples with less symmetries.

Construction of Einstein metrics by generalized Dehn filling

Richard H. Bamler (2012)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

In this paper, we present a new approach to the construction of Einstein metrics by a generalization of Thurston's Dehn filling. In particular in dimension 3, we will obtain an analytic proof of Thurston's result.

Construction of Sobolev spaces of fractional order with sub-riemannian vector fields

Sami Mustapha, François Vigneron (2007)

Annales de l’institut Fourier

Given a smooth family of vector fields satisfying Chow-Hörmander’s condition of step 2 and a regularity assumption, we prove that the Sobolev spaces of fractional order constructed by the standard functional analysis can actually be “computed” with a simple formula involving the sub-riemannian distance. Our approach relies on a microlocal analysis of translation operators in an anisotropic context. It also involves classical estimates of the heat-kernel associated to the sub-elliptic Laplacian.

Contact 3-manifolds twenty years since J. Martinet's work

Yakov Eliashberg (1992)

Annales de l'institut Fourier

The paper gives an account of the recent development in 3-dimensional contact geometry. The central result of the paper states that there exists a unique tight contact structure on S 3 . Together with the earlier classification of overtwisted contact structures on 3-manifolds this result completes the classification of contact structures on S 3 .

Contact CR-Submanifolds of Kenmotsu Manifolds

Atçeken, Mehmet (2011)

Serdica Mathematical Journal

2000 Mathematics Subject Classification: 53C15, 53C42.In this paper, we research some fundamental properties of contact CR-Submanifolds of a Kenmotsu manifold. We show that the anti-invariant distribution is always integrable and give a necessary and sufficient condition for the invariant distribution to be integrable. After then, properties of the induced structures on submanifold by almost contact metric structure on the ambient manifold are categorized. Finally, we give some results for contact...

Contact CR-submanifolds with parallel mean curvature vector of a Sasakian space form

U-Hang Ki, Masahiro Kon (1993)

Colloquium Mathematicae

The purpose of this paper is to study contact CR-submanifolds with nonvanishing parallel mean curvature vector immersed in a Sasakian space form. In §1 we state general formulas on contact CR-submanifolds of a Sasakian manifold, especially those of a Sasakian space form. §2 is devoted to the study of contact CR-submanifolds with nonvanishing parallel mean curvature vector and parallel f-structure in the normal bundle immersed in a Sasakian space form. Moreover, we suppose that the second fundamental...

Contact elements on fibered manifolds

Ivan Kolář, Włodzimierz M. Mikulski (2003)

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

For every product preserving bundle functor T μ on fibered manifolds, we describe the underlying functor of any order ( r , s , q ) , s r q . We define the bundle K k , l r , s , q Y of ( k , l ) -dimensional contact elements of the order ( r , s , q ) on a fibered manifold Y and we characterize its elements geometrically. Then we study the bundle of general contact elements of type μ . We also determine all natural transformations of K k , l r , s , q Y into itself and of T ( K k , l r , s , q Y ) into itself and we find all natural operators lifting projectable vector fields and horizontal one-forms...

Contact geometry of multidimensional Monge-Ampère equations: characteristics, intermediate integrals and solutions

Dmitri V. Alekseevsky, Ricardo Alonso-Blanco, Gianni Manno, Fabrizio Pugliese (2012)

Annales de l’institut Fourier

We study the geometry of multidimensional scalar 2 n d order PDEs (i.e. PDEs with n independent variables), viewed as hypersurfaces in the Lagrangian Grassmann bundle M ( 1 ) over a ( 2 n + 1 ) -dimensional contact manifold ( M , 𝒞 ) . We develop the theory of characteristics of in terms of contact geometry and of the geometry of Lagrangian Grassmannian and study their relationship with intermediate integrals of . After specializing such results to general Monge-Ampère equations (MAEs), we focus our attention to MAEs of...

Contact hamiltonians distinguishing locally certain Goursat systems

Piotr Mormul (2000)

Banach Center Publications

For the first time in dimension 9, the Goursat distributions are not locally smoothly classified by their small growth vector at a point. As shown in [M1], in dimension 9 of the underlying manifold 93 different local behaviours are possible and four irregular pairs of them have coinciding small growth vectors. In the present paper we distinguish geometrically objects in three of those pairs. Smooth functions in three variables - contact hamiltonians in the terminology of Arnold, [A] - help to do...
