On heredity of strongly proximal actions

C. Robinson Edward Raja (2003)

Archivum Mathematicum

We prove that action of a semigroup T on compact metric space X by continuous selfmaps is strongly proximal if and only if T action on 𝒫 ( X ) is strongly proximal. As a consequence we prove that affine actions on certain compact convex subsets of finite-dimensional vector spaces are strongly proximal if and only if the action is proximal.

On hit-and-miss hyperspace topologies

Gerald Beer, Robert K. Tamaki (1993)

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

The Vietoris topology and Fell topologies on the closed subsets of a Hausdorff uniform space are prototypes for hit-and-miss hyperspace topologies, having as a subbase all closed sets that hit a variable open set, plus all closed sets that miss (= fail to intersect) a variable closed set belonging to a prescribed family Δ of closed sets. In the case of the Fell topology, where Δ consists of the compact sets, a closed set A misses a member B of Δ if and only if A is far from B in a uniform sense....

On homeomorphic and diffeomorphic solutions of the Abel equation on the plane

Zbigniew Leśniak (1993)

Annales Polonici Mathematici

We consider the Abel equation φ[f(x)] = φ(x) + a on the plane ℝ², where f is a free mapping (i.e. f is an orientation preserving homeomorphism of the plane onto itself with no fixed points). We find all its homeomorphic and diffeomorphic solutions φ having positive Jacobian. Moreover, we give some conditions which are equivalent to f being conjugate to a translation.

On homogeneous totally disconnected 1-dimensional spaces

Kazuhiro Kawamura, Lex Oversteegen, E. Tymchatyn (1996)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

The Cantor set and the set of irrational numbers are examples of 0-dimensional, totally disconnected, homogeneous spaces which admit elegant characterizations and which play a crucial role in analysis and dynamical systems. In this paper we will start the study of 1-dimensional, totally disconnected, homogeneous spaces. We will provide a characterization of such spaces and use it to show that many examples of such spaces which exist in the literature in various fields are all homeomorphic. In particular,...

On ideal equal convergence

Rafał Filipów, Marcin Staniszewski (2014)

Open Mathematics

We consider ideal equal convergence of a sequence of functions. This is a generalization of equal convergence introduced by Császár and Laczkovich [Császár Á., Laczkovich M., Discrete and equal convergence, Studia Sci. Math. Hungar., 1975, 10(3–4), 463–472]. Our definition of ideal equal convergence encompasses two different kinds of ideal equal convergence introduced in [Das P., Dutta S., Pal S.K., On and *-equal convergence and an Egoroff-type theorem, Mat. Vesnik, 2014, 66(2), 165–177]_and [Filipów...

On indecomposability and composants of chaotic continua

Hisao Kato (1996)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

A homeomorphism f:X → X of a compactum X with metric d is expansive if there is c > 0 such that if x,y ∈ X and x ≠ y, then there is an integer n ∈ ℤ such that d ( f n ( x ) , f n ( y ) ) > c . A homeomorphism f: X → X is continuum-wise expansive if there is c > 0 such that if A is a nondegenerate subcontinuum of X, then there is an integer n ∈ ℤ such that d i a m i f n ( A ) > c . Clearly, every expansive homeomorphism is continuum-wise expansive, but the converse assertion is not true. In [6], we defined the notion of chaotic continua of homeomorphisms...
