Evolution in a changing environment: existence of solutions

P. Rybka, Q. Tang, D. Waxman (2003)

Colloquium Mathematicae

We establish the existence of solutions of an intrinsically nonlinear differential-integral equation that arises from the mathematical modelling of the evolution of an asexual population in a changing environment. The main objective is to pave the way for a rigorous analysis of the linear stability of travelling wave solutions of the corresponding problem.

Evolution in a migrating population model

Włodzimierz Bąk, Tadeusz Nadzieja (2012)

Applicationes Mathematicae

We consider a model of migrating population occupying a compact domain Ω in the plane. We assume the Malthusian growth of the population at each point x ∈ Ω and that the mobility of individuals depends on x ∈ Ω. The evolution of the probability density u(x,t) that a randomly chosen individual occupies x ∈ Ω at time t is described by the nonlocal linear equation u t = Ω φ ( y ) u ( y , t ) d y - φ ( x ) u ( x , t ) , where φ(x) is a given function characterizing the mobility of individuals living at x. We show that the asymptotic behaviour of u(x,t)...

Evolving morphogenetic fields in the zebra skin pattern based on Turing's morphogen hypothesis

Carlos Graván, Rafael Lahoz-Beltra (2004)

International Journal of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science

One of the classical problems of morphogenesis is to explain how patterns of different animals evolved resulting in a consolidated and stable pattern generation after generation. In this paper we simulated the evolution of two hypothetical morphogens, or proteins, that diffuse across a grid modeling the zebra skin pattern in an embryonic state, composed of pigmented and nonpigmented cells. The simulation experiments were carried out applying a genetic algorithm to the Young cellular automaton: a...

Existence and asymptotics of solutions of the Debye-Nernst-Planck system in ℝ²

Agnieszka Herczak, Michał Olech (2009)

Banach Center Publications

We investigate a system describing electrically charged particles in the whole space ℝ². Our main goal is to describe large time behavior of solutions which start their evolution from initial data of small size. This is achieved using radially symmetric self-similar solutions.

Existence and exponential stability of a periodic solution for fuzzy cellular neural networks with time-varying delays

Qianhong Zhang, Lihui Yang, Daixi Liao (2011)

International Journal of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science

Fuzzy cellular neural networks with time-varying delays are considered. Some sufficient conditions for the existence and exponential stability of periodic solutions are obtained by using the continuation theorem based on the coincidence degree and the differential inequality technique. The sufficient conditions are easy to use in pattern recognition and automatic control. Finally, an example is given to show the feasibility and effectiveness of our methods.
