Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

Similarity:

Let G be a finite group and p a prime number. We prove that if G is a finite group of order | PSL ( 2 , p 2 ) | such that G has an irreducible character of degree p 2 and we know that G has no irreducible character θ such that 2 p θ ( 1 ) , then G is isomorphic to PSL ( 2 , p 2 ) . As a consequence of our result we prove that PSL ( 2 , p 2 ) is uniquely determined by the structure of its complex group algebra.

For a complex character χ of a finite group G , it is known that the product sh ( χ ) = l L ( χ ) ( χ ( 1 ) - l ) is a multiple of | G | , where L ( χ ) is the image of χ on G - { 1 } . The character χ is said to be a sharp character of type L if L = L ( χ ) and sh ( χ ) = | G | . If the principal character of G is not an irreducible constituent of χ , then the character χ is called normalized. It is proposed as a problem by P. J. Cameron and M. Kiyota, to find finite groups G with normalized sharp characters of type { - 1 , 0 , 2 } . Here we prove that such a group with nontrivial...

Thompson’s conjecture for the alternating group of degree 2 p and 2 p + 1

Azam Babai, Ali Mahmoudifar (2017)

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

Similarity:

For a finite group G denote by N ( G ) the set of conjugacy class sizes of G . In 1980s, J. G. Thompson posed the following conjecture: If L is a finite nonabelian simple group, G is a finite group with trivial center and N ( G ) = N ( L ) , then G L . We prove this conjecture for an infinite class of simple groups. Let p be an odd prime. We show that every finite group G with the property Z ( G ) = 1 and N ( G ) = N ( A i ) is necessarily isomorphic to A i , where i { 2 p , 2 p + 1 } .

Let V be the complex vector space of homogeneous linear polynomials in the variables x 1 , ... , x m . Suppose G is a subgroup of S m , and χ is an irreducible character of G . Let H d ( G , χ ) be the symmetry class of polynomials of degree d with respect to G and χ . For any linear operator T acting on V , there is a (unique) induced operator K χ ( T ) End ( H d ( G , χ ) ) acting on symmetrized decomposable polynomials by K χ ( T ) ( f 1 * f 2 * ... * f d ) = T f 1 * T f 2 * ... * T f d . In this paper, we show that the representation T K χ ( T ) of the general linear group G L ( V ) is equivalent to the direct sum of χ ( 1 ) copies...

On the r -free values of the polynomial x 2 + y 2 + z 2 + k

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

Similarity:

Let k be a fixed integer. We study the asymptotic formula of R ( H , r , k ) , which is the number of positive integer solutions 1 x , y , z H such that the polynomial x 2 + y 2 + z 2 + k is r -free. We obtained the asymptotic formula of R ( H , r , k ) for all r 2 . Our result is new even in the case r = 2 . We proved that R ( H , 2 , k ) = c k H 3 + O ( H 9 / 4 + ε ) , where c k > 0 is a constant depending on k . This improves upon the error term O ( H 7 / 3 + ε ) obtained by G.-L. Zhou, Y. Ding (2022).

We show that ω * { p } is not normal, if p is a limit point of some countable subset of ω * , consisting of points of character ω 1 . Moreover, such a point p is a Kunen point and a super Kunen point.

C * -points vs P -points and P -points

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

Similarity:

In a Tychonoff space X , the point p X is called a C * -point if every real-valued continuous function on C { p } can be extended continuously to p . Every point in an extremally disconnected space is a C * -point. A classic example is the space 𝐖 * = ω 1 + 1 consisting of the countable ordinals together with ω 1 . The point ω 1 is known to be a C * -point as well as a P -point. We supply a characterization of C * -points in totally ordered spaces. The remainder of our time is aimed at studying when a point in a product space...

Let f , g and h be three distinct primitive holomorphic cusp forms of even integral weights k 1 , k 2 and k 3 for the full modular group Γ = SL ( 2 , ) , respectively, and let λ f ( n ) , λ g ( n ) and λ h ( n ) denote the n th normalized Fourier coefficients of f , g and h , respectively. We consider the cancellations of sums related to arithmetic functions λ g ( n ) , λ h ( n ) twisted by λ f ( n ) and establish the following results: n x λ f ( n ) λ g ( n ) i λ h ( n ) j f , g , h , ε x 1 - 1 / 2 i + j + ε for any ε > 0 , where 1 i 2 , j 5 are any fixed positive integers.

Let f j = k a k f ( 2 j + 1 x - 2 k ) , where the sum is taken over the lattice of all points k in n having integer-valued components, j∈ℕ and a k . Let A p q s be either B p q s or F p q s (s ∈ ℝ, 0 < p < ∞, 0 < q ≤ ∞) on n . The aim of the paper is to clarify under what conditions f j | A p q s is equivalent to 2 j ( s - n / p ) ( k | a k | p ) 1 / p f | A p q s .

Generalized versions of Ilmanen lemma: Insertion of C 1 , ω or C loc 1 , ω functions

We prove that for a normed linear space X , if f 1 : X is continuous and semiconvex with modulus ω , f 2 : X is continuous and semiconcave with modulus ω and f 1 f 2 , then there exists f C 1 , ω ( X ) such that f 1 f f 2 . Using this result we prove a generalization of Ilmanen lemma (which deals with the case ω ( t ) = t ) to the case of an arbitrary nontrivial modulus ω . This generalization (where a C l o c 1 , ω function is inserted) gives a positive answer to a problem formulated by A. Fathi and M. Zavidovique in 2010.

In this paper we prove the following theorems in incidence geometry. 1.
