Minimal systems and distributionally scrambled sets

Piotr Oprocha (2012)

Bulletin de la Société Mathématique de France

In this paper we investigate numerous constructions of minimal systems from the point of view of ( 1 , 2 ) -chaos (but most of our results concern the particular cases of distributional chaos of type 1 and 2 ). We consider standard classes of systems, such as Toeplitz flows, Grillenberger K -systems or Blanchard-Kwiatkowski extensions of the Chacón flow, proving that all of them are DC2. An example of DC1 minimal system with positive topological entropy is also introduced. The above mentioned results answer...

Mixing properties of nearly maximal entropy measures for d shifts of finite type

E. Robinson, Ayşe Şahin (2000)

Colloquium Mathematicae

We prove that for a certain class of d shifts of finite type with positive topological entropy there is always an invariant measure, with entropy arbitrarily close to the topological entropy, that has strong metric mixing properties. With the additional assumption that there are dense periodic orbits, one can ensure that this measure is Bernoulli.

Module structure in Conley theory with some applications

Zdzisław Dzedzej (2014)

Banach Center Publications

A multiplicative structure in the cohomological version of Conley index is described following a joint paper by the author with K. Gęba and W. Uss. In the case of equivariant flows we apply a normalization procedure known from equivariant degree theory and we propose a new continuation invariant. The theory is applied then to obtain a mountain pass type theorem. Another illustrative application is a result on multiple bifurcations for some elliptic PDE.

More on the Kechris-Pestov-Todorcevic correspondence: Precompact expansions

L. Nguyen Van Thé (2013)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

In 2005, the paper [KPT05] by Kechris, Pestov and Todorcevic provided a powerful tool to compute an invariant of topological groups known as the universal minimal flow. This immediately led to an explicit representation of this invariant in many concrete cases. However, in some particular situations, the framework of [KPT05] does not allow one to perform the computation directly, but only after a slight modification of the original argument. The purpose of the present paper is to supplement [KPT05]...

Multifractal spectra of Birkhoff averages for a piecewise monotone interval map

Franz Hofbauer (2010)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

We study the entropy spectrum of Birkhoff averages and the dimension spectrum of Lyapunov exponents for piecewise monotone transformations on the interval. In general, these transformations do not have finite Markov partitions and do not satisfy the specification property. We characterize these multifractal spectra in terms of the Legendre transform of a suitably defined pressure function.

Multiple disjointness and invariant measures on minimal distal flows

Juho Rautio (2015)

Studia Mathematica

We examine multiple disjointness of minimal flows, that is, we find conditions under which the product of a collection of minimal flows is itself minimal. Our main theorem states that, for a collection X i i I of minimal flows with a common phase group, assuming each flow satisfies certain structural and algebraic conditions, the product i I X i is minimal if and only if i I X i e q is minimal, where X i e q is the maximal equicontinuous factor of X i . Most importantly, this result holds when each X i is distal. When the phase...

Multiple solutions of indefinite elliptic systems via a Galerkin-type Conley index theory

Marek Izydorek, Krzysztof P. Rybakowski (2003)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Let Ω be a bounded domain in N with smooth boundary. Consider the following elliptic system: - Δ u = v H ( u , v , x ) in Ω, - Δ v = u H ( u , v , x ) in Ω, u = 0, v = 0 in ∂Ω. (ES) We assume that H is an even "-"-type Hamiltonian function whose first order partial derivatives satisfy appropriate growth conditions. We show that if (0,0) is a hyperbolic solution of (ES), then (ES) has at least 2|μ| nontrivial solutions, where μ = μ(0,0) is the renormalized Morse index of (0,0). This proves a conjecture by Angenent and van der Vorst.

Multivalued Lyapunov functions for homeomorphisms of the 2-torus

Patrice Le Calvez (2006)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Let F be a homeomorphism of 𝕋² = ℝ²/ℤ² isotopic to the identity and f a lift to the universal covering space ℝ². We suppose that κ ∈ H¹(𝕋²,ℝ) is a cohomology class which is positive on the rotation set of f. We prove the existence of a smooth Lyapunov function of f whose derivative lifts a non-vanishing smooth closed form on 𝕋² whose cohomology class is κ.
