On weak minima of certain integral functionals

Gioconda Moscariello (1998)

Annales Polonici Mathematici

We prove a regularity result for weak minima of integral functionals of the form Ω F ( x , D u ) d x where F(x,ξ) is a Carathéodory function which grows as | ξ | p with some p > 1.

Optimal control of a rotating body beam

Weijiu Liu (2002)

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

In this paper we consider the problem of optimal control of the model for a rotating body beam, which describes the dynamics of motion of a beam attached perpendicularly to the center of a rigid cylinder and rotating with the cylinder. The control is applied on the cylinder via a torque to suppress the vibrations of the beam. We prove that there exists at least one optimal control and derive a necessary condition for the control. Furthermore, on the basis of iteration method, we propose numerical...

Optimal design of laminated plate with obstacle

Ján Lovíšek (1992)

Applications of Mathematics

The aim of the present paper is to study problems of optimal design in mechanics, whose variational form is given by inequalities expressing the principle of virtual power in its inequality form. The elliptic, linear symmetric operators as well as convex sets of possible states depend on the control parameter. The existence theorem for the optimal control is applied to design problems for an elastic laminated plate whose variable thickness appears as a control variable.

Optimal networks for mass transportation problems

Alessio Brancolini, Giuseppe Buttazzo (2005)

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

In the framework of transport theory, we are interested in the following optimization problem: given the distributions μ + of working people and μ - of their working places in an urban area, build a transportation network (such as a railway or an underground system) which minimizes a functional depending on the geometry of the network through a particular cost function. The functional is defined as the Wasserstein distance of μ + from μ - with respect to a metric which depends on the transportation network....

Optimal potentials for Schrödinger operators

Giuseppe Buttazzo, Augusto Gerolin, Berardo Ruffini, Bozhidar Velichkov (2014)

Journal de l’École polytechnique — Mathématiques

We consider the Schrödinger operator - Δ + V ( x ) on H 0 1 ( Ω ) , where Ω is a given domain of d . Our goal is to study some optimization problems where an optimal potential V 0 has to be determined in some suitable admissible classes and for some suitable optimization criteria, like the energy or the Dirichlet eigenvalues.

Oscillations and concentrations generated by 𝒜 -free mappings and weak lower semicontinuity of integral functionals

Irene Fonseca, Martin Kružík (2010)

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

DiPerna's and Majda's generalization of Young measures is used to describe oscillations and concentrations in sequences of maps { u k } k L p ( Ω ; m ) satisfying a linear differential constraint 𝒜 u k = 0 . Applications to sequential weak lower semicontinuity of integral functionals on 𝒜 -free sequences and to weak continuity of determinants are given. In particular, we state necessary and sufficient conditions for weak* convergence of det ϕ k * det ϕ in measures on the closure of Ω n if ϕ k ϕ in W 1 , n ( Ω ; n ) . This convergence holds, for example, under...

Oscillations and concentrations in sequences of gradients

Martin Kružík, Agnieszka Kałamajska (2008)

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

We use DiPerna’s and Majda’s generalization of Young measures to describe oscillations and concentrations in sequences of gradients, { u k } , bounded in L p ( Ø ; m × n ) if p > 1 and Ω n is a bounded domain with the extension property in W 1 , p . Our main result is a characterization of those DiPerna-Majda measures which are generated by gradients of Sobolev maps satisfying the same fixed Dirichlet boundary condition. Cases where no boundary conditions nor regularity of Ω are required and links with lower semicontinuity results...
