On spherical nilpotent orbits and beyond

Dmitri I. Panyushev (1999)

Annales de l'institut Fourier

We continue investigations that are concerned with the complexity of nilpotent orbits in semisimple Lie algebras. We give a characterization of the spherical nilpotent orbits in terms of minimal Levi subalgebras intersecting them. This provides a kind of canonical form for such orbits. A description minimal non-spherical orbits in all simple Lie algebras is obtained. The theory developed for the adjoint representation is then extended to Vinberg’s θ -groups. This yields a description of spherical...

On standard norm varieties

Nikita A. Karpenko, Alexander S. Merkurjev (2013)

Annales scientifiques de l'École Normale Supérieure

Let  p be a prime integer and F a field of characteristic 0 . Let  X be thenorm varietyof a symbol in the Galois cohomology group H n + 1 ( F , μ p n ) (for some n 1 ), constructed in the proof of the Bloch-Kato conjecture. The main result of the paper affirms that the function field F ( X ) has the following property: for any equidimensional variety Y , the change of field homomorphism CH ( Y ) CH ( Y F ( X ) ) of Chow groups with coefficients in integers localized at  p is surjective in codimensions < ( dim X ) / ( p - 1 ) . One of the main ingredients of the proof is a computation...

On surfaces of general type with pg = q = 1, K2 = 3.

Francesco Polizzi (2005)

Collectanea Mathematica

The moduli space M of surfaces of general type with pg = q = 1, K2 = g = 3 (where g is the genus of the Albanese fibration) was constructed by Catanese and Ciliberto in [14]. In this paper we characterize the subvariety M2 ⊂ M corresponding to surfaces containing a genus 2 pencil, and moreover we show that there exists a non-empty, dense subset M0 ⊂ M which parametrizes isomorphism classes of surfaces with birational bicanonical map.

On surfaces with p 𝑔 = q = 1 and non-ruled bicanonical involution

Carlos Rito (2007)

Annali della Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa - Classe di Scienze

This paper classifies surfaces S of general type with p g = q = 1 having an involution i such that S / i has non-negative Kodaira dimension and that the bicanonical map of S factors through the double cover induced by i . It is shown that S / i is regular and either: a) the Albanese fibration of S is of genus 2 or b) S has no genus 2 fibration and S / i is birational to a K 3 surface. For case a) a list of possibilities and examples are given. An example for case b) with K 2 = 6 is also constructed.
