Heights of varieties in multiprojective spaces and arithmetic Nullstellensätze

Carlos D’Andrea, Teresa Krick, Martín Sombra (2013)

Annales scientifiques de l'École Normale Supérieure

We present bounds for the degree and the height of the polynomials arising in some problems in effective algebraic geometry including the implicitization of rational maps and the effective Nullstellensatz over a variety. Our treatment is based on arithmetic intersection theory in products of projective spaces and extends to the arithmetic setting constructions and results due to Jelonek. A key role is played by the notion of canonical mixed height of a multiprojective variety. We study this notion...

Higgs bundles and representation spaces associated to morphisms

Indranil Biswas, Carlos Florentino (2015)

Archivum Mathematicum

Let G be a connected reductive affine algebraic group defined over the complex numbers, and K G be a maximal compact subgroup. Let X , Y be irreducible smooth complex projective varieties and f : X Y an algebraic morphism, such that π 1 ( Y ) is virtually nilpotent and the homomorphism f * : π 1 ( X ) π 1 ( Y ) is surjective. Define f ( π 1 ( X ) , G ) = { ρ Hom ( π 1 ( X ) , G ) A ρ factors through f * } , f ( π 1 ( X ) , K ) = { ρ Hom ( π 1 ( X ) , K ) A ρ factors through f * } , where A : G GL ( Lie ( G ) ) is the adjoint action. We prove that the geometric invariant theoretic quotient f ( π 1 ( X , x 0 ) , G ) / / G admits a deformation retraction to f ( π 1 ( X , x 0 ) , K ) / K . We also show that the space of conjugacy classes of n almost commuting elements...

Higher order duality and toric embeddings

Alicia Dickenstein, Sandra Di Rocco, Ragni Piene (2014)

Annales de l’institut Fourier

The notion of higher order dual varieties of a projective variety, introduced by Piene in 1983, is a natural generalization of the classical notion of projective duality. In this paper we study higher order dual varieties of projective toric embeddings. We express the degree of the second dual variety of a 2-jet spanned embedding of a smooth toric threefold in geometric and combinatorial terms, and we classify those whose second dual variety has dimension less than expected. We also describe the...
