A study of bending waves in infinite and anisotropic plates

Ove Lindblom, Reinhold Näslund, Lars-Erik Persson, Karl-Evert Fällström (1997)

Applications of Mathematics

In this paper we present a unified approach to obtain integral representation formulas for describing the propagation of bending waves in infinite plates. The general anisotropic case is included and both new and well-known formulas are obtained in special cases (e.g. the classical Boussinesq formula). The formulas we have derived have been compared with experimental data and the coincidence is very good in all cases.

A study of Galerkin method for the heat convection equations

Polina Vinogradova, Anatoli Zarubin (2012)

Applications of Mathematics

The paper investigates the Galerkin method for an initial boundary value problem for heat convection equations. New error estimates for the approximate solutions and their derivatives in strong norm are obtained.

A study of the dynamic of influence through differential equations∗

Emmanuel Maruani, Michel Grabisch, Agnieszka Rusinowska (2012)

RAIRO - Operations Research

The paper concerns a model of influence in which agents make their decisions on a certain issue. We assume that each agent is inclined to make a particular decision, but due to a possible influence of the others, his final decision may be different from his initial inclination. Since in reality the influence does not necessarily stop after one step, but may iterate, we present a model which allows us to study the dynamic of influence. An innovative...

A study on the budget constrained facility location model considering inventory management cost∗

Hyun-Woong Jin (2012)

RAIRO - Operations Research

One of the important issues on the distribution network design is to incorporate inventory management cost into the facility location model. This paper deals with a network model making the decisions on the facility location such as the number of DCs and their locations as well as the decisions on the inventory management such as the ordering quantity and the level of safety stock at each DC. The considered model differs from the previous works by...

A subelliptic Bourgain–Brezis inequality

Yi Wang, Po-Lam Yung (2014)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

We prove an approximation lemma on (stratified) homogeneous groups that allows one to approximate a function in the non-isotropic Sobolev space N L ˙ 1 , Q by L functions, generalizing a result of Bourgain–Brezis. We then use this to obtain a Gagliardo–Nirenberg inequality for on the Heisenberg group n .

A Superconvergence result for mixed finite element approximations of the eigenvalue problem

Qun Lin, Hehu Xie (2012)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

In this paper, we present a superconvergence result for the mixed finite element approximations of general second order elliptic eigenvalue problems. It is known that a superconvergence result has been given by Durán et al. [Math. Models Methods Appl. Sci. 9 (1999) 1165–1178] and Gardini [ESAIM: M2AN 43 (2009) 853–865] for the lowest order Raviart-Thomas approximation of Laplace eigenvalue problems. In this work, we introduce a new way to derive the superconvergence of general second order elliptic...

A survey of results on nonlinear Venttsel problems

Darya E. Apushkinskaya, Alexander I. Nazarov (2000)

Applications of Mathematics

We review the recent results for boundary value problems with boundary conditions given by second-order integral-differential operators. Particular attention has been paid to nonlinear problems (without integral terms in the boundary conditions) for elliptic and parabolic equations. For these problems we formulate some statements concerning a priori estimates and the existence theorems in Sobolev and Hölder spaces.
