On classification of -manifolds according to genus
We revisit the linearization theorems for proper Lie groupoids around general orbits (statements and proofs). In the fixed point case (known as Zung’s theorem) we give a shorter and more geometric proof, based on a Moser deformation argument. The passage to general orbits (Weinstein) is given a more conceptual interpretation: as a manifestation of Morita invariance. A compact manifold is called Bieberbach if it carries a flat Riemannian metric. Bieberbach manifolds are aspherical, therefore the supremum of their systolic ratio, over the set of Riemannian metrics, is finite by a fundamental result of M. Gromov. We study the optimal systolic ratio of compact -dimensional orientable Bieberbach manifolds which are not tori, and prove that it cannot be realized by a flat metric.
