A generalization of Steenrod’s approximation theorem

Christoph Wockel (2009)

Archivum Mathematicum

In this paper we aim for a generalization of the Steenrod Approximation Theorem from [16, Section 6.7], concerning a smoothing procedure for sections in smooth locally trivial bundles. The generalization is that we consider locally trivial smooth bundles with a possibly infinite-dimensional typical fibre. The main result states that a continuous section in a smooth locally trivial bundles can always be smoothed out in a very controlled way (in terms of the graph topology on spaces of continuous...

Algebraic properties of decorated splitting obstruction groups

A. Cavicchioli, Y. V. Muranov, D. Repovš (2001)

Bollettino dell'Unione Matematica Italiana

Computational aspects of robust Holt-Winters smoothing based on M -estimation

Christophe Croux, Sarah Gelper, Roland Fried (2008)

Applications of Mathematics

To obtain a robust version of exponential and Holt-Winters smoothing the idea of M -estimation can be used. The difficulty is the formulation of an easy-to-use recursive formula for its computation. A first attempt was made by Cipra (Robust exponential smoothing, J. Forecast. 11 (1992), 57–69). The recursive formulation presented there, however, is unstable. In this paper, a new recursive computing scheme is proposed. A simulation study illustrates that the new recursions result in smaller forecast...

Metric Ricci Curvature and Flow for PL Manifolds

Emil Saucan (2013)

Actes des rencontres du CIRM

We summarize here the main ideas and results of our papers [28], [14], as presented at the 2013 CIRM Meeting on Discrete curvature and we augment these by bringing up an application of one of our main results, namely to solving a problem regarding cube complexes.

On the homotopy type of Diff ( M n ) and connected problems

Dan Burghelea (1973)

Annales de l'institut Fourier

This paper reports on some results concerning:a) The homotopy type of the group of diffeomorphisms Diff ( M n ) of a differentiable compact manifold M n (with C -topology).b) the result of the homotopy comparison of this space with the group of all homeomorphisms Homeo M n (with C o -topology). As a biproduct, one gets new facts about the homotopy groups of Diff ( D n , D n ) , Top n , Top n / O n and about the number of connected components of the space of topological and combinatorial pseudoisotopies. The results are contained in Section 1 and Section...
