A new algorithm for approximating the least concave majorant

Martin Franců, Ron Kerman, Gord Sinnamon (2017)

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

Similarity:

The least concave majorant, F ^ , of a continuous function F on a closed interval, I , is defined by F ^ ( x ) = inf { G ( x ) : G F , G concave } , x I . We present an algorithm, in the spirit of the Jarvis March, to approximate the least concave majorant of a differentiable piecewise polynomial function of degree at most three on I . Given any function F 𝒞 4 ( I ) , it can be well-approximated on I by a clamped cubic spline S . We show that S ^ is then a good approximation to F ^ . We give two examples, one to illustrate, the other to apply our algorithm. ...

On extending C k functions from an open set to with applications

Walter D. Burgess, Robert M. Raphael (2023)

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

Similarity:

For k { } and U open in , let C k ( U ) be the ring of real valued functions on U with the first k derivatives continuous. It is shown that for f C k ( U ) there is g C ( ) with U coz g and h C k ( ) with f g | U = h | U . The function f and its k derivatives are not assumed to be bounded on U . The function g is constructed using splines based on the Mollifier function. Some consequences about the ring C k ( ) are deduced from this, in particular that Q cl ( C k ( ) ) = Q ( C k ( ) ) .

Discriminants of Chebyshev radical extensions

Let t be any integer and fix an odd prime . Let Φ ( x ) = T n ( x ) - t denote the n -fold composition of the Chebyshev polynomial of degree shifted by t . If this polynomial is irreducible, let K = ( θ ) , where θ is a root of Φ . We use a theorem of Dedekind in conjunction with previous results of the author to give conditions on t that ensure K is monogenic. For other values of t , we apply a result of Guàrdia, Montes, and Nart to obtain a formula for the discriminant of K and compute an integral basis for the ring...

Let n be a nonnegative integer and let u ∈ (n,n+1]. We say that f is u-times Peano bounded in the approximate (resp. L p , 1 ≤ p ≤ ∞) sense at x m if there are numbers f α ( x ) , |α| ≤ n, such that f ( x + h ) - | α | n f α ( x ) h α / α ! is O ( h u ) in the approximate (resp. L p ) sense as h → 0. Suppose f is u-times Peano bounded in either the approximate or L p sense at each point of a bounded measurable set E. Then for every ε > 0 there is a perfect set Π ⊂ E and a smooth function g such that the Lebesgue measure of E∖Π is less than ε and...

Letting T n (resp. Also T n and U n admit remarkableness integer coordinates on each of the two basis.

The number of conjugacy classes of elements of the Cremona group of some given finite order

Jérémy Blanc (2007)

Bulletin de la Société Mathématique de France

Similarity:

This note presents the study of the conjugacy classes of elements of some given finite order n in the Cremona group of the plane. In particular, it is shown that the number of conjugacy classes is infinite if n is even, n = 3 or n = 5 , and that it is equal to 3 (respectively 9 ) if n = 9 (respectively if n = 15 ) and to 1 for all remaining odd orders. Some precise representative elements of the classes are given.

Best constants for the isoperimetric inequality in quantitative form

Similarity:

We prove some results in the context of isoperimetric inequalities with quantitative terms. In the 2 -dimensional case, our main contribution is a method for determining the optimal coefficients c 1 , ... , c m in the inequality δ P ( E ) k = 1 m c k α ( E ) k + o ( α ( E ) m ) , valid for each Borel set E with positive and finite area, with δ P ( E ) and α ( E ) being, respectively, the 𝑖𝑠𝑜𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐𝑑𝑒𝑓𝑖𝑐𝑖𝑡 and the 𝐹𝑟𝑎𝑒𝑛𝑘𝑒𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑦𝑚𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑟𝑦 of E . In n dimensions, besides proving existence and regularity properties of minimizers for a wide class of 𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑡𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑖𝑠𝑜𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐𝑞𝑢𝑜𝑡𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠 including the lower semicontinuous extension of δ P ( E ) α ( E ) 2 , we...

Absolute continuity with respect to a subset of an interval

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

Similarity:

The aim of this paper is to introduce a generalization of the classical absolute continuity to a relative case, with respect to a subset M of an interval I . This generalization is based on adding more requirements to disjoint systems { ( a k , b k ) } K from the classical definition of absolute continuity – these systems should be not too far from M and should be small relative to some covers of M . We discuss basic properties of relative absolutely continuous functions and compare this class with other...

For n ∈ ℕ, L > 0, and p ≥ 1 let κ p ( n , L ) be the largest possible value of k for which there is a polynomial P ≢ 0 of the form P ( x ) = j = 0 n a j x j , | a 0 | L ( j = 1 n | a j | p ) 1 / p , a j , such that ( x - 1 ) k divides P(x). For n ∈ ℕ, L > 0, and q ≥ 1 let μ q ( n , L ) be the smallest value of k for which there is a polynomial Q of degree k with complex coefficients such that | Q ( 0 ) | > 1 / L ( j = 1 n | Q ( j ) | q ) 1 / q . We find the size of κ p ( n , L ) and μ q ( n , L ) for all n ∈ ℕ, L > 0, and 1 ≤ p,q ≤ ∞. The result about μ ( n , L ) is due to Coppersmith and Rivlin, but our proof is completely different and much shorter even...

More on exposed points and extremal points of convex sets in n and Hilbert space

Let 𝕍 be a separable real Hilbert space, k with k < dim 𝕍 , and let B be convex and closed in 𝕍 . Let 𝒫 be a collection of linear k -subspaces of 𝕍 . A point w B is called exposed by 𝒫 if there is a P 𝒫 so that ( w + P ) B = { w } . We show that, under some natural conditions, B can be reconstituted as the convex hull of the closure of all its exposed by 𝒫 points whenever 𝒫 is dense and G δ . In addition, we discuss the question when the set of exposed by some 𝒫 points forms a G δ -set.

Generalized versions of Ilmanen lemma: Insertion of C 1 , ω or C loc 1 , ω functions

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

Similarity:

We prove that for a normed linear space X , if f 1 : X is continuous and semiconvex with modulus ω , f 2 : X is continuous and semiconcave with modulus ω and f 1 f 2 , then there exists f C 1 , ω ( X ) such that f 1 f f 2 . Using this result we prove a generalization of Ilmanen lemma (which deals with the case ω ( t ) = t ) to the case of an arbitrary nontrivial modulus ω . This generalization (where a C l o c 1 , ω function is inserted) gives a positive answer to a problem formulated by A. Fathi and M. Zavidovique in 2010.

We consider the integral functional J ( u ) = Ω [ f ( | D u | ) u ] d x , u W 0 1 , 1 ( Ω ) , where Ω n , n 2 , is a nonempty bounded connected open subset of n with smooth boundary, and s f ( | s | ) is a convex, differentiable function.
