An approximation property of quadratic irrationals

Takao Komatsu (2002)

Bulletin de la Société Mathématique de France

Similarity:

Let α > 1 be irrational. Several authors studied the numbers m ( α ) = inf { | y | : y Λ m , y 0 } , where m is a positive integer and Λ m denotes the set of all real numbers of the form y = ϵ 0 α n + ϵ 1 α n - 1 + + ϵ n - 1 α + ϵ n with restricted integer coefficients | ϵ i | m . The value of 1 ( α ) was determined for many particular Pisot numbers and m ( α ) for the golden number. In this paper the value of  m ( α ) is determined for irrational numbers  α , satisfying α 2 = a α ± 1 with a positive integer a .

Lower bound for class numbers of certain real quadratic fields

Mohit Mishra (2023)

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

Similarity:

Let d be a square-free positive integer and h ( d ) be the class number of the real quadratic field ( d ) . We give an explicit lower bound for h ( n 2 + r ) , where r = 1 , 4 . Ankeny and Chowla proved that if g > 1 is a natural number and d = n 2 g + 1 is a square-free integer, then g h ( d ) whenever n > 4 . Applying our lower bounds, we show that there does not exist any natural number n > 1 such that h ( n 2 g + 1 ) = g . We also obtain a similar result for the family ( n 2 g + 4 ) . As another application, we deduce some criteria for a class group of prime power order to be...

Optimality of the Width- w Non-adjacent Form: General Characterisation and the Case of Imaginary Quadratic Bases

Clemens Heuberger, Daniel Krenn (2013)

Journal de Théorie des Nombres de Bordeaux

Similarity:

We consider digit expansions j = 0 - 1 Φ j ( d j ) with an endomorphism Φ of an Abelian group. In such a numeral system, the w -NAF condition (each block of w consecutive digits contains at most one nonzero) is shown to minimise the Hamming weight over all expansions with the same digit set if and only if it fulfills the subadditivity condition (the sum of every two expansions of weight 1 admits an optimal w -NAF). This result is then applied to imaginary quadratic bases, which are used for scalar...

Repdigits in generalized Pell sequences

Jhon J. Bravo, Jose L. Herrera (2020)

Archivum Mathematicum

Similarity:

For an integer k 2 , let ( n ) n be the k - generalized Pell sequence which starts with 0 , ... , 0 , 1 ( k terms) and each term afterwards is given by the linear recurrence n = 2 n - 1 + n - 2 + + n - k . In this paper, we find all k -generalized Pell numbers with only one distinct digit (the so-called repdigits). Some interesting estimations involving generalized Pell numbers, that we believe are of independent interest, are also deduced. This paper continues a previous work that searched for repdigits in the usual Pell sequence ( P n ( 2 ) ) n . ...

Similarity:

Let k 2 and let ( P n ( k ) ) n 2 - k be the k -generalized Pell sequence defined by P n ( k ) = 2 P n - 1 ( k ) + P n - 2 ( k ) + + P n - k ( k ) for n 2 with initial conditions P - ( k - 2 ) ( k ) = P - ( k - 3 ) ( k ) = = P - 1 ( k ) = P 0 ( k ) = 0 , P 1 ( k ) = 1 . In this study, we handle the equation P n ( k ) = y m in positive integers n , m , y , k such that k , y 2 , and give an upper bound on n . Also, we will show that the equation P n ( k ) = y m with 2 y 1000 has only one solution given by P 7 ( 2 ) = 13 2 .

Principalization algorithm via class group structure

Daniel C. Mayer (2014)

Journal de Théorie des Nombres de Bordeaux

Similarity:

For an algebraic number field K with 3 -class group Cl 3 ( K ) of type ( 3 , 3 ) , the structure of the 3 -class groups Cl 3 ( N i ) of the four unramified cyclic cubic extension fields N i , 1 i 4 , of K is calculated with the aid of presentations for the metabelian Galois group G 3 2 ( K ) = Gal ( F 3 2 ( K ) | K ) of the second Hilbert 3 -class field F 3 2 ( K ) of K . In the case of a quadratic base field K = ( D ) it is shown that the structure of the 3 -class groups of the four S 3 -fields N 1 , ... , N 4 frequently determines the type of principalization of the 3 -class group of K in N 1 , ... , N 4 . This...

Let F be an imaginary quadratic field and 𝒪 its ring of integers. Let 𝔫 𝒪 be a non-zero ideal and let p > 5 be a rational inert prime in F and coprime with 𝔫 . Let V be an irreducible finite dimensional representation of 𝔽 ¯ p [ GL 2 ( 𝔽 p 2 ) ] . We establish that a system of Hecke eigenvalues appearing in the cohomology with coefficients in V already lives in the cohomology with coefficients in 𝔽 ¯ p d e t e for some e 0 ; except possibly in some few cases.
