The main purpose of this article is to give a generalization of the logarithmic-type estimate in the Hardy-Sobolev spaces $H^{k,p}\left(G\right)$; $k\in {\mathbb{N}}^{*}$, $1\le p\le \infty$ and $G$ is the open unit disk or the annulus of the complex space $ℂ$.

For a function $f\in L_{loc}^p\left(ℝⁿ\right)$ the notion of p-mean variation of order 1, ${₁}^p(f,ℝⁿ)$ is defined. It generalizes the concept of F. Riesz variation of functions on the real line ℝ¹ to ℝⁿ, n > 1. The characterisation of the Sobolev space $W^{1,p}\left(ℝⁿ\right)$ in terms of ${₁}^p(f,ℝⁿ)$ is directly related to the characterisation of $W^{1,p}\left(ℝⁿ\right)$ by Lipschitz type pointwise inequalities of Bojarski, Hajłasz and Strzelecki and to the Bourgain-Brezis-Mironescu approach.

We prove some optimal estimates of Hölder-logarithmic type in the Hardy-Sobolev spaces $H^{k,p}\left(G\right)$, where $k\in {\mathbb{N}}^{*}$, $1\le p\le \infty$ and $G$ is either the open unit disk $𝔻$ or the annular domain $G_s$, $0<s<1$ of the complex space $ℂ$. We study embeddings of spaces of Besov-Morrey type, $i{d}_{\Omega }{:}_{p₁,u₁,q₁}^{s₁}\left(\Omega \right){\hookrightarrow }_{p₂,u₂,q₂}^{s₂}\left(\Omega \right)$, where $\Omega \subset {ℝ}^d$ is a bounded domain, and obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the continuity and compactness of $i{d}_{\Omega }$. This continues our earlier studies relating to the case of ${ℝ}^d$. Moreover, we also characterise embeddings into the scale of $L_p$ spaces or into the space of bounded continuous functions.

Given a compact manifold $N^n\subset {ℝ}^{\nu }$ and real numbers $s\ge 1$ and $1\le p\&lt;\infty$, we prove that the class $C^{\infty }({\overline{Q}}^m;N^n)$ of smooth maps on the cube with values into $N^n$ is strongly dense in the fractional Sobolev space $W^{s,p}(Q^m;N^n)$ when $N^n$ is $\lfloor sp\rfloor$ simply connected. For $sp$ integer, we prove weak sequential density of $C^{\infty }({\overline{Q}}^m;N^n)$ when $N^n$ is $sp-1$ simply connected. The proofs are based on the existence of a retraction of ${ℝ}^{\nu }$ onto $N^n$ except for a small subset of $N^n$ and on a pointwise estimate of fractional derivatives of composition of maps in $W^{s,p}\cap W^{1,sp}$.

We give new characterizations of the analytic Besov spaces $B_p$ on the unit ball $𝔹$ of ${ℂ}^n$ in terms of oscillations and integral means over some Euclidian balls contained in $𝔹$.

We show that every operator from ${\ell }_s$ to ${\ell }_p\otimes ̂{\ell }_q$ is compact when 1 ≤ p,q < s and that every operator from ${\ell }_s$ to ${\ell }_p\widehat{\otimes ̂}{\ell }_q$ is compact when 1/p + 1/q > 1 + 1/s.

Let $\Omega \subset {ℝ}^n$ be a bounded starshaped domain and consider the $(p,q)$-Laplacian problem $$\begin{array}{c}\hfill -{\Delta }_{p}u-{\Delta }_{q}u=\lambda \left(𝐱\right){\left|u\right|}^{p^{☆}-2}u+\mu {\left|u\right|}^{r-2}u\end{array}$$ where $\mu$ is a positive parameter, $1<q\le p<n$, $r\ge p^{☆}$ and $p^{☆}:=\frac{np}{n-p}$ is the critical Sobolev exponent. In this short note we address the question of non-existence for non-trivial solutions to the $(p,q)$-Laplacian problem. In particular we show the non-existence of non-trivial solutions to the problem by using a method based on Pohozaev identity.

In this paper, we examine a natural question concerning the divisors of the polynomial $x^n-1$: “How often does $x^n-1$ have a divisor of every degree between $1$ and $n$?” In a previous paper, we considered the situation when $x^n-1$ is factored in $\mathbb{Z}\left[x\right]$. In this paper, we replace $\mathbb{Z}\left[x\right]$ with ${𝔽}_p\left[x\right]$, where $p$ is an arbitrary-but-fixed prime. We also consider those $n$ where this condition holds for all $p$.

In a Tychonoff space $X$, the point $p\in X$ is called a $C^{*}$-point if every real-valued continuous function on $C\setminus \left\{p\right\}$ can be extended continuously to $p$. Every point in an extremally disconnected space is a $C^{*}$-point. A classic example is the space ${𝐖}^{*}={\omega }_1+1$ consisting of the countable ordinals together with ${\omega }_1$. Let ${\mathrm{𝙴𝙼𝙱𝙴𝙳}}_{k\to d}$ be the following algorithmic problem: Given a finite simplicial complex $K$ of dimension at most $k$, does there exist a (piecewise linear) embedding of $K$ into ${ℝ}^d$? Let $\Omega$ be a bounded domain of class $C^2$ in $ℝ$N and let $K$ be a compact subset of $\partial \Omega$. Assume that $q\ge (N+1)/\left(N-1\right)$ and denote by $U_K$ the maximal solution of $-\Delta u+u^q=0$ in $\Omega$ which vanishes on $\partial \Omega \setminus K$. We obtain sharp upper and lower estimates for $U_K$ in terms of the Bessel capacity $C_{2/q,q^{\text{'}}}$ and prove that $U_K$ is $\sigma$-moderate. In addition we describe the precise asymptotic behavior of $U_K$ at points $\sigma \in K$, which depends on the “density” of $K$ at $\sigma$, measured in terms of the capacity $C_{2/q,q^{\text{'}}}$.
