For p ≥ 1, a subset K of a Banach space X is said to be relatively p-compact if $K\subset {\sum }_{n=1}^{\infty }\alpha ₙxₙ:\alpha ₙ\in Ball\left(l_{p^{\text{'}}}\right)$, where p’ = p/(p-1) and $xₙ\in l_p^s\left(X\right)$. An operator T ∈ B(X,Y) is said to be p-compact if T(Ball(X)) is relatively p-compact in Y. Similarly, weak p-compactness may be defined by considering $xₙ\in l_p^w\left(X\right)$. It is shown that there is a subspace $Z_q$ of ${\ell }_q$ for $1<q<2$ which is isomorphic to ${\ell }_q$ such that ${\ell }_q/Z_q$ does not have the approximation property. On the other hand, for $2<p<\infty$ there is a subspace $Y_p$ of ${\ell }_p$ such that $Y_p$ does not have the approximation property (AP) but the quotient space ${\ell }_p/Y_p$ is isomorphic to ${\ell }_p$. The result is obtained by defining random “Enflo-Davie spaces” $Y_p$ which with full probability fail AP for all $2<p\le \infty$ and have AP for all $1\le p\le 2$. For $1<p\le 2$, $Y_p$ are isomorphic to ${\ell }_p$.

We prove the existence of an effectively computable integer polynomial P(x,t₀,...,t₅) having the following property. Every continuous function $f:{ℝ}^s\to ℝ$ can be approximated with arbitrary accuracy by an infinite sum ${\sum }_{r=1}^{\infty }{H}_r(x₁,...,x_s)\in C^{\infty }\left({ℝ}^s\right)$ of analytic functions $H_r$, each solving the same system of universal partial differential equations, namely $P(x_{\sigma };H_r,\partial H_r/\partial x_{\sigma },...,\partial ⁵H_r/\partial x{⁵}_{\sigma }⁵)=0$ (σ = 1,..., s).

For Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$, let $K_{w^{*}}(X^{*},Y)$ denote the space of all $w^{*}-w$ continuous compact operators from $X^{*}$ to $Y$ endowed with the operator norm. A Banach space $X$ has the $wGP$ property if every Grothendieck subset of $X$ is relatively weakly compact. In this paper we study Banach spaces with property $wGP$. We investigate whether the spaces $K_{w^{*}}(X^{*},Y)$ and $X{\otimes }_{ϵ}Y$ have the $wGP$ property, when $X$ and $Y$ have the $wGP$ property.

By using the concepts of limited $p$-converging operators between two Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$, $L_p$-sets and $L_p$-limited sets in Banach spaces, we obtain some characterizations of these concepts relative to some well-known geometric properties of Banach spaces, such as $*$-Dunford–Pettis property of order $p$ and Pelczyński’s property of order $p$, $1\le p<\infty$.

Following a suggestion of W.M. Schmidt and L. Summerer, we construct a proper $3$-system $(P_1,P_2,P_3)$ with the property ${\overline{\varphi }}_3=1$. In fact, our method generalizes to provide $n$-systems with ${\overline{\varphi }}_n=1$, for arbitrary $n\ge 3$. We visualize our constructions with graphics. We further present explicit examples of numbers ${\xi }_1,...,{\xi }_{n-1}$ that induce the $n$-systems in question.

The classical Khintchine–Groshev theorem assumes a monotonicity condition on the approximating functions $\underline{\psi }$. We consider simultaneous solutions of operator Sylvester equations $A_{i}X-X{B}_i=C_i$ (1 ≤ i ≤ k), where $(A₁,...,A_k)$ and $(B₁,...,B_k)$ are commuting k-tuples of bounded linear operators on Banach spaces and ℱ, respectively, and $(C₁,...,C_k)$ is a (compatible) k-tuple of bounded linear operators from ℱ to , and prove that if the joint Taylor spectra of $(A₁,...,A_k)$ and $(B₁,...,B_k)$ do not intersect, then this system of Sylvester equations has a unique simultaneous solution.
