Topological dynamics of unordered Ramsey structures

Moritz Müller, András Pongrácz (2015)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Similarity:

We investigate the connections between Ramsey properties of Fraïssé classes and the universal minimal flow M ( G ) of the automorphism group G of their Fraïssé limits. As an extension of a result of Kechris, Pestov and Todorcevic (2005) we show that if the class has finite Ramsey degree for embeddings, then this degree equals the size of M ( G ) . We give a partial answer to a question of Angel, Kechris and Lyons (2014) showing that if is a relational Ramsey class and G is amenable, then M ( G ) admits...

Polycyclic groups with automorphisms of order four

Tao Xu, Fang Zhou, Heguo Liu (2016)

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

Similarity:

In this paper, we study the structure of polycyclic groups admitting an automorphism of order four on the basis of Neumann’s result, and prove that if α is an automorphism of order four of a polycyclic group G and the map ϕ : G G defined by g ϕ = [ g , α ] is surjective, then G contains a characteristic subgroup H of finite index such that the second derived subgroup H ' ' is included in the centre of H and C H ( α 2 ) is abelian, both C G ( α 2 ) and G / [ G , α 2 ] are abelian-by-finite. These results extend recent and classical results in...

On automorphisms of the Banach space / c

Piotr Koszmider, Cristóbal Rodríguez-Porras (2016)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Similarity:

We investigate Banach space automorphisms T : / c / c focusing on the possibility of representing their fragments of the form T B , A : ( A ) / c ( A ) ( B ) / c ( B ) for A,B ⊆ ℕ infinite by means of linear operators from ( A ) into ( B ) , infinite A×B-matrices, continuous maps from B* = βB∖B into A*, or bijections from B to A. This leads to the analysis of general bounded linear operators on / c . We present many examples, introduce and investigate several classes of operators, for some of them we obtain satisfactory representations and for...

Explicit computations of all finite index bimodules for a family of II 1 factors

Stefaan Vaes (2008)

Annales scientifiques de l'École Normale Supérieure

Similarity:

We study II 1 factors M and N associated with good generalized Bernoulli actions of groups having an infinite almost normal subgroup with the relative property (T). We prove the following rigidity result : every finite index M - N -bimodule (in particular, every isomorphism between M and N ) is described by a commensurability of the groups involved and a commensurability of their actions. The fusion algebra of finite index M - M -bimodules is identified with an extended Hecke fusion algebra,...

Horocyclic products of trees

Laurent Bartholdi, Markus Neuhauser, Wolfgang Woess (2008)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

Similarity:

Let T 1 , , T d be homogeneous trees with degrees q 1 + 1 , , q d + 1 3 , respectively. For each tree, let 𝔥 : T j be the Busemann function with respect to a fixed boundary point (end). Its level sets are the horocycles. The horocyclic product of T 1 , , T d is the graph 𝖣𝖫 ( q 1 , , q d ) consisting of all d -tuples x 1 x d T 1 × × T d with 𝔥 ( x 1 ) + + 𝔥 ( x d ) = 0 , equipped with a natural neighbourhood relation. In the present paper, we explore the geometric, algebraic, analytic and probabilistic properties of these graphs and their isometry groups. If d = 2 and q 1 = q 2 = q then we obtain a Cayley graph...

The number of conjugacy classes of elements of the Cremona group of some given finite order

Jérémy Blanc (2007)

Bulletin de la Société Mathématique de France

Similarity:

This note presents the study of the conjugacy classes of elements of some given finite order n in the Cremona group of the plane. In particular, it is shown that the number of conjugacy classes is infinite if n is even, n = 3 or n = 5 , and that it is equal to 3 (respectively 9 ) if n = 9 (respectively if n = 15 ) and to 1 for all remaining odd orders. Some precise representative elements of the classes are given.

On NIP and invariant measures

Ehud Hrushovski, Anand Pillay (2011)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

Similarity:

We study forking, Lascar strong types, Keisler measures and definable groups, under an assumption of NIP (not the independence property), continuing aspects of the paper [16]. Among key results are (i) if p = tp ( b / A ) does not fork over A then the Lascar strong type of b over A coincides with the compact strong type of b over A and any global nonforking extension of p is Borel definable over bdd ( A ) , (ii) analogous statements for Keisler measures and definable groups, including the fact that G 000 = G 00 for G ...

The distribution of second p -class groups on coclass graphs

Daniel C. Mayer (2013)

Journal de Théorie des Nombres de Bordeaux

Similarity:

General concepts and strategies are developed for identifying the isomorphism type of the second p -class group G = Gal ( F p 2 ( K ) | K ) , that is the Galois group of the second Hilbert p -class field F p 2 ( K ) , of a number field K , for a prime p . The isomorphism type determines the position of G on one of the coclass graphs 𝒢 ( p , r ) , r 0 , in the sense of Eick, Leedham-Green, and Newman. It is shown that, for special types of the base field K and of its p -class group Cl p ( K ) , the position of G is restricted to certain admissible branches...

Principalization algorithm via class group structure

Daniel C. Mayer (2014)

Journal de Théorie des Nombres de Bordeaux

Similarity:

For an algebraic number field K with 3 -class group Cl 3 ( K ) of type ( 3 , 3 ) , the structure of the 3 -class groups Cl 3 ( N i ) of the four unramified cyclic cubic extension fields N i , 1 i 4 , of K is calculated with the aid of presentations for the metabelian Galois group G 3 2 ( K ) = Gal ( F 3 2 ( K ) | K ) of the second Hilbert 3 -class field F 3 2 ( K ) of K . In the case of a quadratic base field K = ( D ) it is shown that the structure of the 3 -class groups of the four S 3 -fields N 1 , ... , N 4 frequently determines the type of principalization of the 3 -class group of K in N 1 , ... , N 4 . This...

A Dichotomy Principle for Universal Series

V. Farmaki, V. Nestoridis (2008)

Bulletin of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Mathematics

Similarity:

Applying results of the infinitary Ramsey theory, namely the dichotomy principle of Galvin-Prikry, we show that for every sequence ( α j ) j = 1 of scalars, there exists a subsequence ( α k j ) j = 1 such that either every subsequence of ( α k j ) j = 1 defines a universal series, or no subsequence of ( α k j ) j = 1 defines a universal series. In particular examples we decide which of the two cases holds.

On a characterization of k -trees

De-Yan Zeng, Jian Hua Yin (2015)

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

Similarity:

A graph G is a k -tree if either G is the complete graph on k + 1 vertices, or G has a vertex v whose neighborhood is a clique of order k and the graph obtained by removing v from G is also a k -tree. Clearly, a k -tree has at least k + 1 vertices, and G is a 1-tree (usual tree) if and only if it is a 1 -connected graph and has no K 3 -minor. In this paper, motivated by some properties of 2-trees, we obtain a characterization of k -trees as follows: if G is a graph with at least k + 1 vertices, then G is...

A note on normal generation and generation of groups

Andreas Thom (2015)

Communications in Mathematics

Similarity:

In this note we study sets of normal generators of finitely presented residually p -finite groups. We show that if an infinite, finitely presented, residually p -finite group G is normally generated by g 1 , , g k with order n 1 , , n k { 1 , 2 , } { } , then β 1 ( 2 ) ( G ) k - 1 - i = 1 k 1 n i , where β 1 ( 2 ) ( G ) denotes the first 2 -Betti number of G . We also show that any k -generated group with β 1 ( 2 ) ( G ) k - 1 - ε must have girth greater than or equal 1 / ε .

A note on solvable vertex stabilizers of s -transitive graphs of prime valency

Song-Tao Guo, Hailong Hou, Yong Xu (2015)

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

Similarity:

A graph X , with a group G of automorphisms of X , is said to be ( G , s ) -transitive, for some s 1 , if G is transitive on s -arcs but not on ( s + 1 ) -arcs. Let X be a connected ( G , s ) -transitive graph of prime valency p 5 , and G v the vertex stabilizer of a vertex v V ( X ) . Suppose that G v is solvable. Weiss (1974) proved that | G v | p ( p - 1 ) 2 . In this paper, we prove that G v ( p m ) × n for some positive integers m and n such that n div m and m p - 1 .

Obstruction sets and extensions of groups

Francesca Balestrieri (2016)

Acta Arithmetica

Similarity:

Let X be a nice variety over a number field k. We characterise in pure “descent-type” terms some inequivalent obstruction sets refining the inclusion X ( k ) é t , B r X ( k ) B r . In the first part, we apply ideas from the proof of X ( k ) é t , B r = X ( k ) k by Skorobogatov and Demarche to new cases, by proving a comparison theorem for obstruction sets. In the second part, we show that if k are such that E x t ( , k ) , then X ( k ) = X ( k ) . This allows us to conclude, among other things, that X ( k ) é t , B r = X ( k ) k and X ( k ) S o l , B r = X ( k ) S o l k .
