Fokker-Planck equation in bounded domain

Laurent Chupin (2010)

Annales de l’institut Fourier

We study the existence and the uniqueness of a solution  ϕ to the linear Fokker-Planck equation - Δ ϕ + div ( ϕ F ) = f in a bounded domain of  d when F is a “confinement” vector field. This field acting for instance like the inverse of the distance to the boundary. An illustration of the obtained results is given within the framework of fluid mechanics and polymer flows.

Forced anisotropic mean curvature flow of graphs in relative geometry

Dieu Hung Hoang, Michal Beneš (2014)

Mathematica Bohemica

The paper is concerned with the graph formulation of forced anisotropic mean curvature flow in the context of the heteroepitaxial growth of quantum dots. The problem is generalized by including anisotropy by means of Finsler metrics. A semi-discrete numerical scheme based on the method of lines is presented. Computational results with various anisotropy settings are shown and discussed.

Forced oscillation of certain hyperbolic equations with continuous distributed deviating arguments

Satoshi Tanaka, Norio Yoshida (2005)

Annales Polonici Mathematici

Certain hyperbolic equations with continuous distributed deviating arguments are studied, and sufficient conditions are obtained for every solution of some boundary value problems to be oscillatory in a cylindrical domain. Our approach is to reduce the multi-dimensional oscillation problems to one-dimensional oscillation problems for functional differential inequalities by using some integral means of solutions.

Fourier diffraction theorem for the tensor fields

Alexander Leonidovich Balandin (2023)

Applications of Mathematics

The paper is devoted to the electromagnetic inverse scattering problem for a dielectric anisotropic and magnetically isotropic media. The properties of an anisotropic medium with respect to electromagnetic waves are defined by the tensors, which give the relation between the inductions and the fields. The tensor Fourier diffraction theorem derived in the paper can be considered a useful tool for studying tensor fields in inverse problems of electromagnetic scattering. The method is based on the...

Fractional Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov type Equations and their Associated Stochastic Differential Equations

Hahn, Marjorie, Umarov, Sabir (2011)

Fractional Calculus and Applied Analysis

MSC 2010: 26A33, 35R11, 35R60, 35Q84, 60H10 Dedicated to 80-th anniversary of Professor Rudolf GorenfloThere is a well-known relationship between the Itô stochastic differential equations (SDEs) and the associated partial differential equations called Fokker-Planck equations, also called Kolmogorov equations. The Brownian motion plays the role of the basic driving process for SDEs. This paper provides fractional generalizations of the triple relationship between the driving process, corresponding...

Free boundary problems and transonic shocks for the Euler equations in unbounded domains

Gui-Qiang Chen, Mikhail Feldman (2004)

Annali della Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa - Classe di Scienze

We establish the existence and stability of multidimensional transonic shocks (hyperbolic-elliptic shocks), which are not nearly orthogonal to the flow direction, for the Euler equations for steady compressible potential fluids in unbounded domains in n , n 3 . The Euler equations can be written as a second order nonlinear equation of mixed hyperbolic-elliptic type for the velocity potential. The transonic shock problem can be formulated into the following free boundary problem: The free boundary is the...

Free boundary problems arising in tumor models

Avner Friedman (2004)

Atti della Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. Classe di Scienze Fisiche, Matematiche e Naturali. Rendiconti Lincei. Matematica e Applicazioni

We consider several simple models of tumor growth, described by systems of PDEs, and describe results on existence of solutions and on their asymptotic behavior. The boundary of the tumor region is a free boundary. In §1 the model assumes three types of cells, proliferating, quiescent and necrotic, and the corresponding PDE system consists of elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic equations. The model in §2 assumes that the tumor has only proliferating cells. Finally in §3 we consider a model for treatment...

Free Boundary Problems Associated with Multiscale Tumor Models

A. Friedman (2009)

Mathematical Modelling of Natural Phenomena

The present paper introduces a tumor model with two time scales, the time t during which the tumor grows and the cycle time of individual cells. The model also includes the effects of gene mutations on the population density of the tumor cells. The model is formulated as a free boundary problem for a coupled system of elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic equations within the tumor region, with nonlinear and nonlocal terms. Existence and uniqueness theorems are proved, and properties of the free boundary...

Free boundary regularity in Stefan type problems

Ioannis Athanasopoulos (2004)

Atti della Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. Classe di Scienze Fisiche, Matematiche e Naturali. Rendiconti Lincei. Matematica e Applicazioni

Regularity results of free boundaries for Stefan type problems are discussed. The influence that curvature may have on the behavior of the free boundary is studied and various open problems are also mentioned.
