A density theorem for algebra representations on the space (s)

W. Żelazko (1998)

Studia Mathematica

We show that an arbitrary irreducible representation T of a real or complex algebra on the F-space (s), or, more generally, on an arbitrary infinite (topological) product of the field of scalars, is totally irreducible, provided its commutant is trivial. This provides an affirmative solution to a problem of Fell and Doran for representations on these spaces.

Representing non-weakly compact operators

Manuel González, Eero Saksman, Hans-Olav Tylli (1995)

Studia Mathematica

For each S ∈ L(E) (with E a Banach space) the operator R(S) ∈ L(E**/E) is defined by R(S)(x** + E) = S**x** + E(x** ∈ E**). We study mapping properties of the correspondence S → R(S), which provides a representation R of the weak Calkin algebra L(E)/W(E) (here W(E) denotes the weakly compact operators on E). Our results display strongly varying behaviour of R. For instance, there are no non-zero compact operators in Im(R) in the case of L 1 and C(0,1), but R(L(E)/W(E)) identifies isometrically with...

The sum-product algorithm: algebraic independence and computational aspects

Francesco M. Malvestuto (2013)

Kybernetika

The sum-product algorithm is a well-known procedure for marginalizing an “acyclic” product function whose range is the ground set of a commutative semiring. The algorithm is general enough to include as special cases several classical algorithms developed in information theory and probability theory. We present four results. First, using the sum-product algorithm we show that the variable sets involved in an acyclic factorization satisfy a relation that is a natural generalization of probability-theoretic...
