Nonlinear Variational Inequalities Depending on a Parameter

Goeleven, D., Théra, M. (1995)

Serdica Mathematical Journal

This paper develops the results announced in the Note [14]. Using an eigenvalue problem governed by a variational inequality, we try to unify the theory concerning the post-critical equilibrium state of a thin elastic plate subjected to unilateral conditions.

Non-smooth variational bifurcation

Marco Degiovanni, Antonio Marino (1987)

Atti della Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. Classe di Scienze Fisiche, Matematiche e Naturali. Rendiconti Lincei. Matematica e Applicazioni

We consider bifurcation problems associated with some lower semicontinuous functionals that do not satisfy the usual regularity assumptions. For such functionals it is possible to define a generalized "Hessian form" and to show that certain eigenvalues of this one are bifurcation values. The results are applied to a bifurcation problem for elliptic variational inequalities.

Numerical analysis for optimal shape design in elliptic boundary value problems

Zdeněk Kestřánek (1988)

Aplikace matematiky

Shape optimization problems are optimal design problems in which the shape of the boundary plays the role of a design, i.e. the unknown part of the problem. Such problems arise in structural mechanics, acoustics, electrostatics, fluid flow and other areas of engineering and applied science. The mathematical theory of such kind of problems has been developed during the last twelve years. Recently the theory has been extended to cover also situations in which the behaviour of the system is governed...

Numerical approaches to rate-independent processes and applications in inelasticity

Alexander Mielke, Tomáš Roubíček (2009)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis

A conceptual numerical strategy for rate-independent processes in the energetic formulation is proposed and its convergence is proved under various rather mild data qualifications. The novelty is that we obtain convergence of subsequences of space-time discretizations even in case where the limit problem does not have a unique solution and we need no additional assumptions on higher regularity of the limit solution. The variety of general perspectives thus obtained is illustrated on several...

Nuovi teoremi sulle funzioni a variazione limitata

Diego Pallara (1990)

Atti della Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. Classe di Scienze Fisiche, Matematiche e Naturali. Rendiconti Lincei. Matematica e Applicazioni

On a Class of Elliptic Equations for the N-Laplacian in R^n with One-Sided Exponential Growth

Candela, Anna Maria, Squassina, Marco (2003)

Serdica Mathematical Journal

2000 Mathematics Subject Classification: 35J40, 49J52, 49J40, 46E30By means of a suitable nonsmooth critical point theory for lower semicontinuous functionals we prove the existence of infinitely many solutions for a class of quasilinear Dirichlet problems with symmetric non-linearities having a one-sided growth condition of exponential type. The research of the authors was partially supported by the MIUR project “Variational and topological methods in the study of nonlinear phenomena” (COFIN 2001)....

On a contact problem for a viscoelastic von Kármán plate and its semidiscretization

Igor Bock, Ján Lovíšek (2005)

Applications of Mathematics

We deal with the system describing moderately large deflections of thin viscoelastic plates with an inner obstacle. In the case of a long memory the system consists of an integro-differential 4th order variational inequality for the deflection and an equation with a biharmonic left-hand side and an integro-differential right-hand side for the Airy stress function. The existence of a solution in a special case of the Dirichlet-Prony series is verified by transforming the problem into a sequence of...

On a regularization method for variational inequalities with P_0 mappings

Igor Konnov, Elena Mazurkevich, Mohamed Ali (2005)

International Journal of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science

We consider partial Browder-Tikhonov regularization techniques for variational inequality problems with P_0 cost mappings and box-constrained feasible sets. We present classes of economic equilibrium problems which satisfy such assumptions and propose a regularization method for these problems.
