Rademacher-Carlitz polynomials

We introduce and study the Rademacher-Carlitz polynomial $R (u, v, s, t, a, b) : = \sum_{k = ⌈ s ⌉}^{⌈ s ⌉ + b - 1} u^{⌊ (k a + t) ⌋} / b_{v^{k}}$ where $a, b \in ℤ_{> 0}$ , s,t ∈ ℝ, and u and v are variables. These polynomials generalize and unify various Dedekind-like sums and polynomials; most naturally, one may view R(u,v,s,t,a,b) as a polynomial analogue (in the sense of Carlitz) of the Dedekind-Rademacher sum $r_{t} (a, b) : = \sum_{k = 0}^{b - 1} (((k a + t) / b)) ((k / b))$ , which appears in various number-theoretic, combinatorial, geometric, and computational contexts. We show that, given an n-dimensional normed space X, a sequence of $N = {(8 / ε)}^{2 n}$ independent random vectors ${(X_{i})}_{i = 1}^{N}$ , uniformly distributed in the unit ball of X*, with high probability forms an ε-net for this unit ball. Thus the random linear map $Γ : ℝ \to ℝ^{N}$ defined by $Γ x = {(⟨ x, X_{i} ⟩)}_{i = 1}^{N}$ embeds X in $ℓ_{\infty}^{N}$ with at most 1 + ε norm distortion. In the case X = ℓ₂ⁿ we obtain a random 1+ε-embedding into $ℓ_{\infty}^{N}$ with asymptotically best possible relation between N, n, and ε.

For a given lattice, we establish an equivalence between closed zones for the corresponding Voronoï polytope, suitable hyperplane sections of the corresponding Delaunay partition, and rank $1$ quadratic forms which are extreme rays for the corresponding $L$ -type domain.
