Global asymptotic stabilisation of an active mass damper for a flexible beam

Laura Menini, Antonio Tornambè, Luca Zaccarian (1999)

Kybernetika

In this paper, a finite dimensional approximated model of a mechanical system constituted by a vertical heavy flexible beam with lumped masses placed along the beam and a mobile mass located at the tip, is proposed; such a model is parametric in the approximation order, so that a prescribed accuracy in the representation of the actual system can be easily obtained with the proposed model. The system itself can be understood as a simple representation of a building subject to transverse vibrations,...

Global well-posedness and blow up for the nonlinear fractional beam equations

Shouquan Ma, Guixiang Xu (2010)

Applicationes Mathematicae

We establish the Strichartz estimates for the linear fractional beam equations in Besov spaces. Using these estimates, we obtain global well-posedness for the subcritical and critical defocusing fractional beam equations. Of course, we need to assume small initial data for the critical case. In addition, by the convexity method, we show that blow up occurs for the focusing fractional beam equations with negative energy.

Identification problem for nonlinear beam -- extension for different types of boundary conditions

Radová, Jana, Machalová, Jitka (2023)

Programs and Algorithms of Numerical Mathematics

Identification problem is a framework of mathematical problems dealing with the search for optimal values of the unknown coefficients of the considered model. Using experimentally measured data, the aim of this work is to determine the coefficients of the given differential equation. This paper deals with the extension of the continuous dependence results for the Gao beam identification problem with different types of boundary conditions by using appropriate analytical inequalities with a special...

Incompressibility in Rod and Shell Theories

Stuart S. Antman, Friedemann Schuricht (2010)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis

We treat the problem of constructing exact theories of rods and shells for thin incompressible bodies. We employ a systematic method that consists in imposing constraints to reduce the number of degrees of freedom of each cross section to a finite number. We show that it is very difficult to produce theories that exactly preserve the incompressibility and we show that it is impossible to do so for naive theories. In particular, many exact theories have nonlocal effects.

Ingham type theorems and applications to control theory

Claudio Baiocchi, Vilmos Komornik, Paola Loreti (1999)

Bollettino dell'Unione Matematica Italiana

Ingham-type inequalities and Riesz bases of divided differences

Sergei Avdonin, William Moran (2001)

International Journal of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science

We study linear combinations of exponentials e^{iλ_nt} , λ_n ∈ Λ in the case where the distance between some points λ_n tends to zero. We suppose that the sequence Λ is a finite union of uniformly discrete sequences. In (Avdonin and Ivanov, 2001), necessary and sufficient conditions were given for the family of divided differences of exponentials to form a Riesz basis in space L^2 (0,T). Here we prove that if the upper uniform density of Λ is less than T/(2π), the family of divided differences can...

La trave in parete sottile a sezione aperta e variabile: formulazione teorica e risultati sperimentali

Mario Pasquino (1984)

Atti della Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. Classe di Scienze Fisiche, Matematiche e Naturali. Rendiconti Lincei. Matematica e Applicazioni

Theoretical and experimental results concerning the shear-center of a bent beam with variable section are carried out. The matrix methods of structural analysis for the static linear elastic problem is extended; the stiffness and load matrix are formulated starting from the sectorial areas theory in order to interpret the effect of non-uniform torsion. The formulation may be used through the general matrix displacement method of structural analysis.

Material constraints in continuum mechanics

Stuart S. Antman (1981)

Atti della Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. Classe di Scienze Fisiche, Matematiche e Naturali. Rendiconti Lincei. Matematica e Applicazioni

Mathematical models of suspension bridges

Gabriela Tajčová (1997)

Applications of Mathematics

In this work we try to explain various mathematical models describing the dynamical behaviour of suspension bridges such as the Tacoma Narrows bridge. Our attention is concentrated on the derivation of these models, an interpretation of particular parameters and on a discussion of their advantages and disadvantages. Our work should be a starting point for a qualitative study of dynamical structures of this type and that is why we have a closer look at the models, which have not been studied in literature...
