Approximation and numerical realization of 3D contact problems with given friction and a coefficient of friction depending on the solution

Jaroslav Haslinger, Tomáš Ligurský (2009)

Applications of Mathematics

The paper presents the analysis, approximation and numerical realization of 3D contact problems for an elastic body unilaterally supported by a rigid half space taking into account friction on the common surface. Friction obeys the simplest Tresca model (a slip bound is given a priori) but with a coefficient of friction which depends on a solution. It is shown that a solution exists for a large class of and is unique provided that is Lipschitz continuous with a sufficiently small modulus of...

Crack in a solid under Coulomb friction law

Victor A. Kovtunenko (2000)

Applications of Mathematics

An equilibrium problem for a solid with a crack is considered. We assume that both the Coulomb friction law and a nonpenetration condition hold at the crack faces. The problem is formulated as a quasi-variational inequality. Existence of a solution is proved, and a complete system of boundary conditions fulfilled at the crack surface is obtained in suitable spaces.

Dynamic contact problems with slip-dependent friction in viscoelasticity

Ioan Ionescu, Quoc-Lan Nguyen (2002)

International Journal of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science

The dynamic evolution with frictional contact of a viscoelastic body is considered. The assumptions on the functions used in modelling the contact are broad enough to include both the normal compliance and the Tresca models. The friction law uses a friction coefficient which is a non-monotone function of the slip. The existence and uniqueness of the solution are proved in the general three-dimensional case.

Dynamic contact problems with velocity conditions

Oanh Chau, Viorica Motreanu (2002)

International Journal of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science

We consider dynamic problems which describe frictional contact between a body and a foundation. The constitutive law is viscoelastic or elastic and the frictional contact is modelled by a general subdifferential condition on the velocity, including the normal damped responses. We derive weak formulations for the models and prove existence and uniqueness results. The proofs are based on the theory of second-order evolution variational inequalities. We show that the solutions of the viscoelastic problems...

Dynamic frictional contact of a viscoelastic beam

Marco Campo, José R. Fernández, Georgios E. Stavroulakis, Juan M. Viaño (2006)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis

In this paper, we study the dynamic frictional contact of a viscoelastic beam with a deformable obstacle. The beam is assumed to be situated horizontally and to move, in both horizontal and tangential directions, by the effect of applied forces. The left end of the beam is clamped and the right one is free. Its horizontal displacement is constrained because of the presence of a deformable obstacle, the so-called foundation, which is modelled by a normal compliance contact condition. The effect...

Existence and uniqueness for dynamical unilateral contact with Coulomb friction : a model problem

Patrick Ballard, Stéphanie Basseville (2005)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

A simple dynamical problem involving unilateral contact and dry friction of Coulomb type is considered as an archetype. We are concerned with the existence and uniqueness of solutions of the system with Cauchy data. In the frictionless case, it is known [Schatzman, Nonlinear Anal. Theory, Methods Appl. 2 (1978) 355–373] that pathologies of non-uniqueness can exist, even if all the data are of class C . However, uniqueness is recovered provided that the data are analytic [Ballard, Arch. Rational Mech....

Frictional contact of an anisotropic piezoelectric plate

Isabel N. Figueiredo, Georg Stadler (2009)

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

The purpose of this paper is to derive and study a new asymptotic model for the equilibrium state of a thin anisotropic piezoelectric plate in frictional contact with a rigid obstacle. In the asymptotic process, the thickness of the piezoelectric plate is driven to zero and the convergence of the unknowns is studied. This leads to two-dimensional Kirchhoff-Love plate equations, in which mechanical displacement and electric potential are partly decoupled. Based on this model numerical examples are presented...

Generalized Newton methods for the 2D-Signorini contact problem with friction in function space

Karl Kunisch, Georg Stadler (2005)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

The 2D-Signorini contact problem with Tresca and Coulomb friction is discussed in infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces. First, the problem with given friction (Tresca friction) is considered. It leads to a constraint non-differentiable minimization problem. By means of the Fenchel duality theorem this problem can be transformed into a constrained minimization involving a smooth functional. A regularization technique for the dual problem motivated by augmented lagrangians allows to apply an infinite-dimensional...

Mathematical modeling of delamination and nonmonotone friction problems by hemivariational inequalities

Charalambos C. Baniotopoulos, Jaroslav Haslinger, Zuzana Morávková (2005)

Applications of Mathematics

The paper deals with approximations and the numerical realization of a class of hemivariational inequalities used for modeling of delamination and nonmonotone friction problems. Assumptions guaranteeing convergence of discrete models are verified and numerical results of several model examples computed by a nonsmooth variant of Newton method are presented.
