Integrated Design of an Active Flow Control System Using a Time-Dependent Adjoint Method

E.J. Nielsen, W.T. Jones (2011)

Mathematical Modelling of Natural Phenomena

An exploratory study is performed to investigate the use of a time-dependent discrete adjoint methodology for design optimization of a high-lift wing configuration augmented with an active flow control system. The location and blowing parameters associated with a series of jet actuation orifices are used as design variables. In addition, a geometric parameterization scheme is developed to provide a compact set of design variables describing the wing...

Interface model coupling via prescribed local flux balance

Annalisa Ambroso, Christophe Chalons, Frédéric Coquel, Thomas Galié (2014)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

This paper deals with the non-conservative coupling of two one-dimensional barotropic Euler systems at an interface at x = 0. The closure pressure laws differ in the domains x < 0 and x > 0, and a Dirac source term concentrated at x = 0 models singular pressure losses. We propose two numerical methods. The first one relies on ghost state reconstructions at the interface while the second is based on a suitable relaxation framework. Both methods satisfy a well-balanced property for stationary...

Interface tracking method for compressible multifluids

Alina Chertock, Smadar Karni, Alexander Kurganov (2008)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis

This paper is concerned with numerical methods for compressible multicomponent fluids. The fluid components are assumed immiscible, and are separated by material interfaces, each endowed with its own equation of state (EOS). Cell averages of computational cells that are occupied by several fluid components require a “mixed-cell” EOS, which may not always be physically meaningful, and often leads to spurious oscillations. We present a new interface tracking algorithm, which avoids using mixed-cell...

Local preconditioners for steady and unsteady flow applications

Eli Turkel, Veer N. Vatsa (2005)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

Preconditioners for hyperbolic systems are numerical artifacts to accelerate the convergence to a steady state. In addition, the preconditioner should also be included in the artificial viscosity or upwinding terms to improve the accuracy of the steady state solution. For time dependent problems we use a dual time stepping approach. The preconditioner affects the convergence rate and the accuracy of the subiterations within each physical time step. We consider two types of local preconditioners:...

Mathematical study of a petroleum-engineering scheme

Robert Eymard, Raphaèle Herbin, Anthony Michel (2003)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

Models of two phase flows in porous media, used in petroleum engineering, lead to a system of two coupled equations with elliptic and parabolic degenerate terms, and two unknowns, the saturation and the pressure. For the purpose of their approximation, a coupled scheme, consisting in a finite volume method together with a phase-by-phase upstream weighting scheme, is used in the industrial setting. This paper presents a mathematical analysis of this coupled scheme, first showing that it satisfies...

Model of pulverized coal combustion in a furnace

Robert Straka, Jindřich Makovička (2007)

Kybernetika

We describe behavior of the air-coal mixture using the Navier–Stokes equations for gas and particle phases, accompanied by a turbulence model. The undergoing chemical reactions are described by the Arrhenian kinetics (reaction rate proportional to exp - E R T , where T is temperature). We also consider the heat transfer via conduction and radiation. Moreover we use improved turbulence-chemistry interactions for reaction terms. The system of PDEs is discretized using the finite volume method (FVM) and an advection...

Modelling of natural convection flows with large temperature differences : a benchmark problem for low Mach number solvers. Part 1. Reference solutions

Patrick Le Quéré, Catherine Weisman, Henri Paillère, Jan Vierendeels, Erik Dick, Roland Becker, Malte Braack, James Locke (2005)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

There are very few reference solutions in the literature on non-Boussinesq natural convection flows. We propose here a test case problem which extends the well-known De Vahl Davis differentially heated square cavity problem to the case of large temperature differences for which the Boussinesq approximation is no longer valid. The paper is split in two parts: in this first part, we propose as yet unpublished reference solutions for cases characterized by a non-dimensional temperature difference of...

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

In the second part of the paper, we compare the solutions produced in the framework of the conference “Mathematical and numerical aspects of low Mach number flows” organized by INRIA and MAB in Porquerolles, June 2004, to the reference solutions described in Part 1. We make some recommendations on how to produce good quality solutions, and list a number of pitfalls to be avoided.

Non-uniqueness of almost unidirectional inviscid compressible flow

Pavel Šolín, Karel Segeth (2004)

Applications of Mathematics

Our aim is to find roots of the non-unique behavior of gases which can be observed in certain axisymmetric nozzle geometries under special flow regimes. For this purpose, we use several versions of the compressible Euler equations. We show that the main reason for the non-uniqueness is hidden in the energy decomposition into its internal and kinetic parts, and their complementary behavior. It turns out that, at least for inviscid compressible flows, a bifurcation can occur only at flow regimes with...

Numerical methods for fourth order nonlinear degenerate diffusion problems

Jürgen Becker, Günther Grün, Martin Lenz, Martin Rumpf (2002)

Applications of Mathematics

Numerical schemes are presented for a class of fourth order diffusion problems. These problems arise in lubrication theory for thin films of viscous fluids on surfaces. The equations being in general fourth order degenerate parabolic, additional singular terms of second order may occur to model effects of gravity, molecular interactions or thermocapillarity. Furthermore, we incorporate nonlinear surface tension terms. Finally, in the case of a thin film flow driven by a surface active agent (surfactant),...

Numerical simulation of 3D transonic flow through cascades

Jaroslav Fořt, Jiří Fürst, J. Halama, Karel Kozel (2001)

Mathematica Bohemica

The paper deals with the numerical solution of 3D transonic flow through axial turbine cascades. Finite volume methods based on TVD MacCormack cell-centered and Ni’s cell-vertex schemes are discussed. A comparison of numerical results for 3D stator and rotor cascades is presented.

Numerical simulation of flow induced airfoil vibrations with large amplitudes

Winter, Ondřej, Sváček, Petr (2019)

Programs and Algorithms of Numerical Mathematics

This paper is interested with the numerical simulation of the fluid-structure interaction problem realized with the aid of the OpenFOAM package. The case of flow past oscillating NACA 0012 profile was chosen. The loose, strong and combined strong coupling algorithms were tested. The results are presented and a significant improvement of the combined coupling algorithm is shown.

Numerical simulation of generalized Newtonian and Oldroyd-B fluids flow

Keslerová, Radka, Kozel, Karel (2013)

Programs and Algorithms of Numerical Mathematics

This work deals with the numerical solution of generalized Newtonian and Oldroyd-B fluids flow. The governing system of equations is based on the system of balance laws for mass and momentum for incompressible laminar viscous and viscoelastic fluids. Two different definition of the stress tensor are considered. For viscous case Newtonian model is used. For the viscoelastic case Oldroyd-B model is tested. Both presented models can be generalized. In this case the viscosity is defined as a shear rate...
