Global existence for a nuclear fluid in one dimension: the T > 0 case

Bernard Ducomet (2002)

Applications of Mathematics

We consider a simplified one-dimensional thermal model of nuclear matter, described by a system of Navier-Stokes-Poisson type, with a non monotone equation of state due to an effective nuclear interaction. We prove the existence of globally defined (large) solutions of the corresponding free boundary problem, with an exterior pressure P which is not required to be positive, provided sufficient thermal dissipation is present. We give also a partial description of the asymptotic behaviour of the system,...

Global existence of solutions for the 1-D radiative and reactive viscous gas dynamics

Wen Zhang, Jianwen Zhang (2012)

Applications of Mathematics

In this paper, we prove the existence of a global solution to an initial-boundary value problem for 1-D flows of the viscous heat-conducting radiative and reactive gases. The key point here is that the growth exponent of heat conductivity is allowed to be any nonnegative constant; in particular, constant heat conductivity is allowed.

Hyperbolic relaxation models for granular flows

Thierry Gallouët, Philippe Helluy, Jean-Marc Hérard, Julien Nussbaum (2010)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis

In this work we describe an efficient model for the simulation of a two-phase flow made of a gas and a granular solid. The starting point is the two-velocity two-pressure model of Baer and Nunziato [Int. J. Multiph. Flow16 (1986) 861–889]. The model is supplemented by a relaxation source term in order to take into account the pressure equilibrium between the two phases and the granular stress in the solid phase. We show that the relaxation process can be made thermodynamically coherent with an...

Interface tracking method for compressible multifluids

Alina Chertock, Smadar Karni, Alexander Kurganov (2008)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis

This paper is concerned with numerical methods for compressible multicomponent fluids. The fluid components are assumed immiscible, and are separated by material interfaces, each endowed with its own equation of state (EOS). Cell averages of computational cells that are occupied by several fluid components require a “mixed-cell” EOS, which may not always be physically meaningful, and often leads to spurious oscillations. We present a new interface tracking algorithm, which avoids using mixed-cell...

Is GPU the future of Scientific Computing ?

Georges-Henri Cottet, Jean-Matthieu Etancelin, Franck Perignon, Christophe Picard, Florian De Vuyst, Christophe Labourdette (2013)

Annales mathématiques Blaise Pascal

These past few years, new types of computational architectures based on graphics processors have emerged. These technologies provide important computational resources at low cost and low energy consumption. Lots of developments have been done around GPU and many tools and libraries are now available to implement efficiently softwares on those architectures. This article contains the two contributions of the mini-symposium about GPU organized by Loïc Gouarin (Laboratoire de Mathématiques d’Orsay),...

Model of pulverized coal combustion in a furnace

Robert Straka, Jindřich Makovička (2007)

Kybernetika

We describe behavior of the air-coal mixture using the Navier–Stokes equations for gas and particle phases, accompanied by a turbulence model. The undergoing chemical reactions are described by the Arrhenian kinetics (reaction rate proportional to exp - E R T , where T is temperature). We also consider the heat transfer via conduction and radiation. Moreover we use improved turbulence-chemistry interactions for reaction terms. The system of PDEs is discretized using the finite volume method (FVM) and an advection...

Non-uniqueness of almost unidirectional inviscid compressible flow

Pavel Šolín, Karel Segeth (2004)

Applications of Mathematics

Our aim is to find roots of the non-unique behavior of gases which can be observed in certain axisymmetric nozzle geometries under special flow regimes. For this purpose, we use several versions of the compressible Euler equations. We show that the main reason for the non-uniqueness is hidden in the energy decomposition into its internal and kinetic parts, and their complementary behavior. It turns out that, at least for inviscid compressible flows, a bifurcation can occur only at flow regimes with...

Numerical flux-splitting for a class of hyperbolic systems with unilateral constraint

Florent Berthelin (2003)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

We study in this paper some numerical schemes for hyperbolic systems with unilateral constraint. In particular, we deal with the scalar case, the isentropic gas dynamics system and the full-gas dynamics system. We prove the convergence of the scheme to an entropy solution of the isentropic gas dynamics with unilateral constraint on the density and mass loss. We also study the non-trivial steady states of the system.
