On the existence of multiple principal eigenvalues for some indefinite linear eigenvalue problems.

Jacqueline Fleckinger, Jesús Hernández, François De Thélin (2003)

RACSAM

We study the existence of principal eigenvalues for differential operators of second order which are not necessarily in divergence form. We obtain results concerning multiplicity of principal eigenvalues in both the variational and the general case. Our approach uses systematically the Krein-Rutman theorem and fixed point arguments for the inverse of the spectral radius of some associated problems. We also use a variational characterization for both the self-adjoint and the general case.

On the principal eigenvalue of elliptic operators in N and applications

Henry Berestycki, Luca Rossi (2006)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

Two generalizations of the notion of principal eigenvalue for elliptic operators in N are examined in this paper. We prove several results comparing these two eigenvalues in various settings: general operators in dimension one; self-adjoint operators; and “limit periodic” operators. These results apply to questions of existence and uniqueness for some semilinear problems in the whole space. We also indicate several outstanding open problems and formulate some conjectures.

On torsional rigidity and principal frequencies: an invitation to the Kohler−Jobin rearrangement technique

Lorenzo Brasco (2014)

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

We generalize to the p-Laplacian Δp a spectral inequality proved by M.-T. Kohler−Jobin. As a particular case of such a generalization, we obtain a sharp lower bound on the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of Δp of a set in terms of its p-torsional rigidity. The result is valid in every space dimension, for every 1 < p < ∞ and for every open set with finite measure. Moreover, it holds by replacing the first eigenvalue with more general optimal Poincaré-Sobolev constants. The method of proof...

Optimal potentials for Schrödinger operators

Giuseppe Buttazzo, Augusto Gerolin, Berardo Ruffini, Bozhidar Velichkov (2014)

Journal de l’École polytechnique — Mathématiques

We consider the Schrödinger operator - Δ + V ( x ) on H 0 1 ( Ω ) , where Ω is a given domain of d . Our goal is to study some optimization problems where an optimal potential V 0 has to be determined in some suitable admissible classes and for some suitable optimization criteria, like the energy or the Dirichlet eigenvalues.

Pattern and Waves for a Model in Population Dynamics with Nonlocal Consumption of Resources

S. Genieys, V. Volpert, P. Auger (2010)

Mathematical Modelling of Natural Phenomena

We study a reaction-diffusion equation with an integral term describing nonlocal consumption of resources in population dynamics. We show that a homogeneous equilibrium can lose its stability resulting in appearance of stationary spatial structures. They can be related to the emergence of biological species due to the intra-specific competition and random mutations. Various types of travelling waves are observed.

Postprocessing and higher order convergence for the mixed finite element approximations of the Stokes eigenvalue problems

Hongtao Chen, Shanghui Jia, Hehu Xie (2009)

Applications of Mathematics

In this paper we propose a method for improving the convergence rate of the mixed finite element approximations for the Stokes eigenvalue problem. It is based on a postprocessing strategy that consists of solving an additional Stokes source problem on an augmented mixed finite element space which can be constructed either by refining the mesh or by using the same mesh but increasing the order of the mixed finite element space.
