Couples of lower and upper slopes and resonant second order ordinary differential equations with nonlocal boundary conditions

Jean Mawhin, Katarzyna Szymańska-Dębowska (2016)

Mathematica Bohemica

A couple ( σ , τ ) of lower and upper slopes for the resonant second order boundary value problem x ' ' = f ( t , x , x ' ) , x ( 0 ) = 0 , x ' ( 1 ) = 0 1 x ' ( s ) d g ( s ) , with g increasing on [ 0 , 1 ] such that 0 1 d g = 1 , is a couple of functions σ , τ C 1 ( [ 0 , 1 ] ) such that σ ( t ) τ ( t ) for all t [ 0 , 1 ] , σ ' ( t ) f ( t , x , σ ( t ) ) , σ ( 1 ) 0 1 σ ( s ) d g ( s ) , τ ' ( t ) f ( t , x , τ ( t ) ) , τ ( 1 ) 0 1 τ ( s ) d g ( s ) , in the stripe 0 t σ ( s ) d s x 0 t τ ( s ) d s and t [ 0 , 1 ] . It is proved that the existence of such a couple ( σ , τ ) implies the existence and localization of a solution to the boundary value problem. Multiplicity results are also obtained.

Covering dimension and differential inclusions

Giovanni Anello (2000)

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

In this paper we shall establish a result concerning the covering dimension of a set of the type { x X : Φ ( x ) Ψ ( x ) } , where Φ , Ψ are two multifunctions from X into Y and X , Y are real Banach spaces. Moreover, some applications to the differential inclusions will be given.

Criteria for weak compactness of vector-valued integration maps

Susumu Okada, Werner J. Ricker (1994)

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

Criteria are given for determining the weak compactness, or otherwise, of the integration map associated with a vector measure. For instance, the space of integrable functions of a weakly compact integration map is necessarily normable for the mean convergence topology. Results are presented which relate weak compactness of the integration map with the property of being a bicontinuous isomorphism onto its range. Finally, a detailed description is given of the compactness properties for the integration...

Criterion of p -criticality for one term 2 n -order difference operators

Petr Hasil (2011)

Archivum Mathematicum

We investigate the criticality of the one term 2 n -order difference operators l ( y ) k = Δ n ( r k Δ n y k ) . We explicitly determine the recessive and the dominant system of solutions of the equation l ( y ) k = 0 . Using their structure we prove a criticality criterion.

C*-seminorms on partial *-algebras: an overview

Camillo Trapani (2005)

Banach Center Publications

The main facts about unbounded C*-seminorms on partial *-algebras are reviewed and the link with the representation theory is discussed. In particular, starting from the more familiar case of *-algebras, we examine C*-seminorms that are defined from suitable families of positive linear or sesquilinear forms, mimicking the construction of the Gelfand seminorm for Banach *-algebras. The admissibility of these forms in terms of the (unbounded) C*-seminorms they generate is characterized.

Cutting the loss of derivatives for solvability under condition ( Ψ )

Nicolas Lerner (2006)

Bulletin de la Société Mathématique de France

For a principal type pseudodifferential operator, we prove that condition  ( ψ ) implies local solvability with a loss of 3/2 derivatives. We use many elements of Dencker’s paper on the proof of the Nirenberg-Treves conjecture and we provide some improvements of the key energy estimates which allows us to cut the loss of derivatives from ϵ + 3 / 2 for any ϵ > 0 (Dencker’s most recent result) to 3/2 (the present paper). It is already known that condition  ( ψ ) doesnotimply local solvability with a loss of 1 derivative,...
