Optimal domains for the kernel operator associated with Sobolev's inequality

Guillermo P. Curbera, Werner J. Ricker (2003)

Studia Mathematica

Refinements of the classical Sobolev inequality lead to optimal domain problems in a natural way. This is made precise in recent work of Edmunds, Kerman and Pick; the fundamental technique is to prove that the (generalized) Sobolev inequality is equivalent to the boundedness of an associated kernel operator on [0,1]. We make a detailed study of both the optimal domain, providing various characterizations of it, and of properties of the kernel operator when it is extended to act in its optimal domain....

Optimal estimates for the fractional Hardy operator

Yoshihiro Mizuta, Aleš Nekvinda, Tetsu Shimomura (2015)

Studia Mathematica

Let A α f ( x ) = | B ( 0 , | x | ) | - α / n B ( 0 , | x | ) f ( t ) d t be the n-dimensional fractional Hardy operator, where 0 < α ≤ n. It is well-known that A α is bounded from L p to L p α with p α = n p / ( α p - n p + n ) when n(1-1/p) < α ≤ n. We improve this result within the framework of Banach function spaces, for instance, weighted Lebesgue spaces and Lorentz spaces. We in fact find a ’source’ space S α , Y , which is strictly larger than X, and a ’target’ space T Y , which is strictly smaller than Y, under the assumption that A α is bounded from X into Y and the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator...

Optimal LQ-feedback control for a class of first-order hyperbolic distributed parameter systems

Ilyasse Aksikas, Joseph J. Winkin, Denis Dochain (2008)

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

The Linear-Quadratic (LQ) optimal control problem is studied for a class of first-order hyperbolic partial differential equation models by using a nonlinear infinite-dimensional (distributed parameter) Hilbert state-space description. First the dynamical properties of the linearized model around some equilibrium profile are studied. Next the LQ-feedback operator is computed by using the corresponding operator Riccati algebraic equation whose solution is obtained via a related matrix Riccati differential...

Optimal nonlinear transformations of random variables

Aldo Goia, Ernesto Salinelli (2010)

Annales de l'I.H.P. Probabilités et statistiques

In this paper we deepen the study of the nonlinear principal components introduced by Salinelli in 1998, referring to a real random variable. New insights on their probabilistic and statistical meaning are given with some properties. An estimation procedure based on spline functions, adapting to a statistical framework the classical Rayleigh–Ritz method, is introduced. Asymptotic properties of the estimator are proved, providing an upper bound for the rate of convergence under suitable mild conditions....

Optimal time and space regularity for solutions of degenerate differential equations

Alberto Favaron (2009)

Open Mathematics

We derive optimal regularity, in both time and space, for solutions of the Cauchy problem related to a degenerate differential equation in a Banach space X. Our results exhibit a sort of prevalence for space regularity, in the sense that the higher is the order of regularity with respect to space, the lower is the corresponding order of regularity with respect to time.

Optimality Conditions for a Nonlinear Boundary Value Problem Using Nonsmooth Analysis

Mohamed Akkouchi, Abdellah Bounabat, Manfred Goebel (2003)

Annales mathématiques Blaise Pascal

We study in this paper a Lipschitz control problem associated to a semilinear second order ordinary differential equation with pointwise state constraints. The control acts as a coefficient of the state equation. The nonlinear part of the equation is governed by a Nemytskij operator defined by a Lipschitzian but possibly nonsmooth function. We prove the existence of optimal controls and obtain a necessary optimality conditions looking somehow to the Pontryagin’s maximum principle. These conditions...

Optimization problems for structural acoustic models with thermoelasticity and smart materials

Irena Lasiecka (2000)

Discussiones Mathematicae, Differential Inclusions, Control and Optimization

Optimization problem for a structural acoustic model with controls governed by unbounded operators on the state space is considered. This type of controls arises naturally in the context of "smart material technology". The main result of the paper provides an optimal synthesis and solvability of associated nonstandard Riccati equations. It is shown that in spite of the unboundedness of control operators, the resulting gain operators (feedbacks) are bounded on the state space. This allows to provide...

Orbits in symmetric spaces, II

N. J. Kalton, F. A. Sukochev, D. Zanin (2010)

Studia Mathematica

Suppose E is fully symmetric Banach function space on (0,1) or (0,∞) or a fully symmetric Banach sequence space. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on f ∈ E so that its orbit Ω(f) is the closed convex hull of its extreme points. We also give an application to symmetrically normed ideals of compact operators on a Hilbert space.

Orbits of linear operators and Banach space geometry

Jean-Matthieu Augé (2012)

Studia Mathematica

Let T be a bounded linear operator on a (real or complex) Banach space X. If (aₙ) is a sequence of non-negative numbers tending to 0, then the set of x ∈ X such that ||Tⁿx|| ≥ aₙ||Tⁿ|| for infinitely many n’s has a complement which is both σ-porous and Haar-null. We also compute (for some classical Banach space) optimal exponents q > 0 such that for every non-nilpotent operator T, there exists x ∈ X such that ( | | T x | | / | | T | | ) q ( ) , using techniques which involve the modulus of asymptotic uniform smoothness of X.
