Topological spaces admitting a unique fractal structure

Christoph Bandt, T. Retta (1992)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Each homeomorphism from the n-dimensional Sierpiński gasket into itself is a similarity map with respect to the usual metrization. Moreover, the topology of this space determines a kind of Haar measure and a canonical metric. We study spaces with similar properties. It turns out that in many cases, "fractal structure" is not a metric but a topological phenomenon.

Topological spaces compact with respect to a set of filters

Paolo Lipparini (2014)

Open Mathematics

If is a family of filters over some set I, a topological space X is sequencewise -compact if for every I-indexed sequence of elements of X there is such that the sequence has an F-limit point. Countable compactness, sequential compactness, initial κ-compactness, [λ; µ]-compactness, the Menger and Rothberger properties can all be expressed in terms of sequencewise -compactness for appropriate choices of . We show that sequencewise -compactness is preserved under taking products if and only if there...

Topological structure of the space of lower semi-continuous functions

Katsuro Sakai, Shigenori Uehara (2006)

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

Let L ( X ) be the space of all lower semi-continuous extended real-valued functions on a Hausdorff space X , where, by identifying each f with the epi-graph epi ( f ) , L ( X ) is regarded the subspace of the space Cld F * ( X × ) of all closed sets in X × with the Fell topology. Let LSC ( X ) = { f L ( X ) f ( X ) , f ( X ) ( - , ] } and LSC B ( X ) = { f L ( X ) f ( X ) is a bounded subset of } . We show that L ( X ) is homeomorphic to the Hilbert cube Q = [ - 1 , 1 ] if and only if X is second countable, locally compact and infinite. In this case, it is proved that ( L ( X ) , LSC ( X ) , LSC B ( X ) ) is homeomorphic to ( Cone Q , Q × ( 0 , 1 ) , Σ × ( 0 , 1 ) ) (resp. ( Q , s , Σ ) ) if X is compact (resp. X is non-compact), where Cone Q = ( Q × 𝐈 ) / ( Q × { 1 } ) is the cone over...

Topological type of weakly closed subgroups in Banach spaces

Tadeusz Dobrowolski, Janusz Grabowski, Kazuhiro Kawamura (1996)

Studia Mathematica

The main result says that nondiscrete, weakly closed, containing no nontrivial linear subspaces, additive subgroups in separable reflexive Banach spaces are homeomorphic to the complete Erdős space. Two examples of such subgroups in 1 which are interesting from the Banach space theory point of view are discussed.

Topologically maximal convergences, accessibility, and covering maps

Szymon Dolecki, Michel Pillot (1998)

Mathematica Bohemica

Topologically maximal pretopologies, paratopologies and pseudotopologies are characterized in terms of various accessibility properties. Thanks to recent convergence-theoretic descriptions of miscellaneous quotient maps (in terms of topological, pretopological, paratopological and pseudotopological projections), the quotient characterizations of accessibility (in particular, those of G. T. Whyburn and F. Siwiec) are shown to be instances of a single general theorem. Convergence-theoretic characterizations...
