On the regularity of the one-sided Hardy-Littlewood maximal functions

Feng Liu, Suzhen Mao (2017)

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

Similarity:

In this paper we study the regularity properties of the one-dimensional one-sided Hardy-Littlewood maximal operators + and - . More precisely, we prove that + and - map W 1 , p ( ) W 1 , p ( ) with 1 < p < , boundedly and continuously. In addition, we show that the discrete versions M + and M - map BV ( ) BV ( ) boundedly and map l 1 ( ) BV ( ) continuously. Specially, we obtain the sharp variation inequalities of M + and M - , that is, Var ( M + ( f ) ) Var ( f ) and Var ( M - ( f ) ) Var ( f ) if f BV ( ) , where Var ( f ) is the total variation of f on and BV ( ) is the set of all functions f : satisfying Var ( f ) < .

Finite-dimensional maps and dendrites with dense sets of end points

Hisao Kato, Eiichi Matsuhashi (2006)

Colloquium Mathematicae

Similarity:

The first author has recently proved that if f: X → Y is a k-dimensional map between compacta and Y is p-dimensional (0 ≤ k, p < ∞), then for each 0 ≤ i ≤ p + k, the set of maps g in the space C ( X , I p + 2 k + 1 - i ) such that the diagonal product f × g : X Y × I p + 2 k + 1 - i is an (i+1)-to-1 map is a dense G δ -subset of C ( X , I p + 2 k + 1 - i ) . In this paper, we prove that if f: X → Y is as above and D j (j = 1,..., k) are superdendrites, then the set of maps h in C ( X , j = 1 k D j × I p + 1 - i ) such that f × h : X Y × ( j = 1 k D j × I p + 1 - i ) is (i+1)-to-1 is a dense G δ -subset of C ( X , j = 1 k D j × I p + 1 - i ) for each 0 ≤ i ≤ p.

On open maps and related functions over the Salbany compactification

Archivum Mathematicum

Similarity:

Given a topological space X , let 𝒰 X and η X : X 𝒰 X denote, respectively, the Salbany compactification of X and the compactification map called the Salbany map of X . For every continuous function f : X Y , there is a continuous function 𝒰 f : 𝒰 X 𝒰 Y , called the Salbany lift of f , satisfying ( 𝒰 f ) η X = η Y f . If a continuous function f : X Y has a stably compact codomain Y , then there is a Salbany extension F : 𝒰 X Y of f , not necessarily unique, such that F η X = f . In this paper, we give a condition on a space such that its Salbany map is open. In...

Thompson’s conjecture for the alternating group of degree 2 p and 2 p + 1

Azam Babai, Ali Mahmoudifar (2017)

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

Similarity:

For a finite group G denote by N ( G ) the set of conjugacy class sizes of G . In 1980s, J. G. Thompson posed the following conjecture: If L is a finite nonabelian simple group, G is a finite group with trivial center and N ( G ) = N ( L ) , then G L . We prove this conjecture for an infinite class of simple groups. Let p be an odd prime. We show that every finite group G with the property Z ( G ) = 1 and N ( G ) = N ( A i ) is necessarily isomorphic to A i , where i { 2 p , 2 p + 1 } .

Linear response for smooth deformations of generic nonuniformly hyperbolic unimodal maps

Viviane Baladi, Daniel Smania (2012)

Annales scientifiques de l'École Normale Supérieure

Similarity:

We consider C 2 families t f t of  C 4 unimodal maps f t whose critical point is slowly recurrent, and we show that the unique absolutely continuous invariant measure μ t of  f t depends differentiably on  t , as a distribution of order 1 . The proof uses transfer operators on towers whose level boundaries are mollified via smooth cutoff functions, in order to avoid artificial discontinuities. We give a new representation of  μ t for a Benedicks-Carleson map f t , in terms of a single smooth function and the...

C * -points vs P -points and P -points

Jorge Martinez, Warren Wm. McGovern (2022)

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

Similarity:

In a Tychonoff space X , the point p X is called a C * -point if every real-valued continuous function on C { p } can be extended continuously to p . Every point in an extremally disconnected space is a C * -point. A classic example is the space 𝐖 * = ω 1 + 1 consisting of the countable ordinals together with ω 1 . The point ω 1 is known to be a C * -point as well as a P -point. We supply a characterization of C * -points in totally ordered spaces. The remainder of our time is aimed at studying when a point in a product space...

A localization property for B p q s and F p q s spaces

Hans Triebel (1994)

Studia Mathematica

Similarity:

Let f j = k a k f ( 2 j + 1 x - 2 k ) , where the sum is taken over the lattice of all points k in n having integer-valued components, j∈ℕ and a k . Let A p q s be either B p q s or F p q s (s ∈ ℝ, 0 < p < ∞, 0 < q ≤ ∞) on n . The aim of the paper is to clarify under what conditions f j | A p q s is equivalent to 2 j ( s - n / p ) ( k | a k | p ) 1 / p f | A p q s .

Similarity:

Let be a complex Hilbert space, A a positive operator with closed range in ( ) and A ( ) the sub-algebra of ( ) of all A -self-adjoint operators. Assume φ : A ( ) onto itself is a linear continuous map. This paper shows that if φ preserves A -unitary operators such that φ ( I ) = P then ψ defined by ψ ( T ) = P φ ( P T ) is a homomorphism or an anti-homomorphism and ψ ( T ) = ψ ( T ) for all T A ( ) , where P = A + A and A + is the Moore-Penrose inverse of A . A similar result is also true if φ preserves A -quasi-unitary operators in both directions such that there...

Σ s -products revisited

We show that any Σ s -product of at most 𝔠 -many L Σ ( ω ) -spaces has the L Σ ( ω ) -property. This result generalizes some known results about L Σ ( ω ) -spaces. On the other hand, we prove that every Σ s -product of monotonically monolithic spaces is monotonically monolithic, and in a similar form, we show that every Σ s -product of Collins-Roscoe spaces has the Collins-Roscoe property. These results generalize some known results about the Collins-Roscoe spaces and answer some questions due to Tkachuk [Lifting the Collins-Roscoe...

Induced mappings on hyperspaces F n K ( X )

Given a metric continuum X and a positive integer n , F n ( X ) denotes the hyperspace of all nonempty subsets of X with at most n points endowed with the Hausdorff metric. For K F n ( X ) , F n ( K , X ) denotes the set of elements of F n ( X ) containing K and F n K ( X ) denotes the quotient space obtained from F n ( X ) by shrinking F n ( K , X ) to one point set. Given a map f : X Y between continua, f n : F n ( X ) F n ( Y ) denotes the induced map defined by f n ( A ) = f ( A ) . Let K F n ( X ) , we shall consider the induced map in the natural way f n , K : F n K ( X ) F n f ( K ) ( Y ) . In this paper we consider the maps f , f n , f n , K for some...

Multifractal analysis of the divergence of Fourier series

Frédéric Bayart, Yanick Heurteaux (2012)

Annales scientifiques de l'École Normale Supérieure

Similarity:

A famous theorem of Carleson says that, given any function f L p ( 𝕋 ) , p ( 1 , + ) , its Fourier series ( S n f ( x ) ) converges for almost every x 𝕋 . Beside this property, the series may diverge at some point, without exceeding O ( n 1 / p ) . We define the divergence index at  x as the infimum of the positive real numbers β such that S n f ( x ) = O ( n β ) and we are interested in the size of the exceptional sets E β , namely the sets of  x 𝕋 with divergence index equal to  β . We show that quasi-all functions in  L p ( 𝕋 ) have a multifractal behavior with respect to...

Generalized versions of Ilmanen lemma: Insertion of C 1 , ω or C loc 1 , ω functions

Václav Kryštof (2018)

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

Similarity:

We prove that for a normed linear space X , if f 1 : X is continuous and semiconvex with modulus ω , f 2 : X is continuous and semiconcave with modulus ω and f 1 f 2 , then there exists f C 1 , ω ( X ) such that f 1 f f 2 . Using this result we prove a generalization of Ilmanen lemma (which deals with the case ω ( t ) = t ) to the case of an arbitrary nontrivial modulus ω . This generalization (where a C l o c 1 , ω function is inserted) gives a positive answer to a problem formulated by A. Fathi and M. Zavidovique in 2010.
