Convergence of orthogonal series of projections in Banach spaces

Ryszard Jajte, Adam Paszkiewicz (1997)

Annales Polonici Mathematici

Similarity:

For a sequence ( A j ) of mutually orthogonal projections in a Banach space, we discuss all possible limits of the sums S n = j = 1 n A j in a “strong” sense. Those limits turn out to be some special idempotent operators (unbounded, in general). In the case of X = L₂(Ω,μ), an arbitrary unbounded closed and densely defined operator A in X may be the μ-almost sure limit of S n (i.e. S n f A f μ-a.e. for all f ∈ (A)).

Certain additive decompositions in a noncommutative ring

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

Similarity:

We determine when an element in a noncommutative ring is the sum of an idempotent and a radical element that commute. We prove that a 2 × 2 matrix A over a projective-free ring R is strongly J -clean if and only if A J ( M 2 ( R ) ) , or I 2 - A J ( M 2 ( R ) ) , or A is similar to 0 λ 1 μ , where λ J ( R ) , μ 1 + J ( R ) , and the equation x 2 - x μ - λ = 0 has a root in J ( R ) and a root in 1 + J ( R ) . We further prove that f ( x ) R [ [ x ] ] is strongly J -clean if f ( 0 ) R be optimally J -clean.

Regular elements and Green's relations in Menger algebras of terms

Discussiones Mathematicae - General Algebra and Applications

Similarity:

Defining an (n+1)-ary superposition operation S n on the set W τ ( X n ) of all n-ary terms of type τ, one obtains an algebra n - c l o n e τ : = ( W τ ( X n ) ; S n , x 1 , . . . , x n ) of type (n+1,0,...,0). The algebra n-clone τ is free in the variety of all Menger algebras ([9]). Using the operation S n there are different possibilities to define binary associative operations on the set W τ ( X n ) and on the cartesian power W τ ( X n ) n . In this paper we study idempotent and regular elements as well as Green’s relations in semigroups of terms with these binary associative...

Let A be a unital C*-algebra. Denote by P the space of selfadjoint projections of A. We study the relationship between P and the spaces of projections P a determined by the different involutions a induced by positive invertible elements a ∈ A. The maps φ : P P a sending p to the unique q P a with the same range as p and Ω a : P a P a sending q to the unitary part of the polar decomposition of the symmetry 2q-1 are shown to be diffeomorphisms. We characterize the pairs of idempotents q,r ∈ A with ||q-r|| <...

On feebly nil-clean rings

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

Similarity:

A ring R is feebly nil-clean if for any a R there exist two orthogonal idempotents e , f R and a nilpotent w R such that a = e - f + w . Let R be a 2-primal feebly nil-clean ring. We prove that every matrix ring over R is feebly nil-clean. The result for rings of bounded index is also obtained. These provide many classes of rings over which every matrix is the sum of orthogonal idempotent and nilpotent matrices.

Certain decompositions of matrices over Abelian rings

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

Similarity:

A ring R is (weakly) nil clean provided that every element in R is the sum of a (weak) idempotent and a nilpotent. We characterize nil and weakly nil matrix rings over abelian rings. Let R be abelian, and let n . We prove that M n ( R ) is nil clean if and only if R / J ( R ) is Boolean and M n ( J ( R ) ) is nil. Furthermore, we prove that R is weakly nil clean if and only if R is periodic; R / J ( R ) is 3 , B or 3 B where B is a Boolean ring, and that M n ( R ) is weakly nil clean if and only if M n ( R ) is nil clean for all n 2 .

Rings consisting entirely of certain elements

We completely determine when a ring consists entirely of weak idempotents, units and nilpotents. We prove that such ring is exactly isomorphic to one of the following: a Boolean ring; 3 3 ; 3 B where B is a Boolean ring; local ring with nil Jacobson radical; M 2 ( 2 ) or M 2 ( 3 ) ; or the ring of a Morita context with zero pairings where the underlying rings are 2 or 3 .

On the asymptotics of counting functions for Ahlfors regular sets

Similarity:

We deal with the so-called Ahlfors regular sets (also known as s -regular sets) in metric spaces. First we show that those sets correspond to a certain class of tree-like structures. Building on this observation we then study the following question: Under which conditions does the limit lim ε 0 + ε s N ( ε , K ) exist, where K is an s -regular set and N ( ε , K ) is for instance the ε -packing number of K ?

Let G(X) denote the smallest (von Neumann) regular ring of real-valued functions with domain X that contains C(X), the ring of continuous real-valued functions on a Tikhonov topological space (X,τ). We investigate when G(X) coincides with the ring C ( X , τ δ ) of continuous real-valued functions on the space ( X , τ δ ) , where τ δ is the smallest Tikhonov topology on X for which τ τ δ and C ( X , τ δ ) is von Neumann regular. The compact and metric spaces for which G ( X ) = C ( X , τ δ ) are characterized. Necessary, and different sufficient,...

Similarity:

Let R and S be commutative rings with unity, f : R S a ring homomorphism and J an ideal of S . Then the subring R f J : = { ( a , f ( a ) + j ) a R and j J } of R × S is called the amalgamation of R with S along J with respect to f . In this paper, we determine when R f J is a (generalized) filter ring.

Internally club and approachable for larger structures

A ring R is called right P-injective if every homomorphism from a principal right ideal of R to R R can be extended to a homomorphism from R R to R R . Let R be a ring and G a group.
