Let R be a prime ring of characteristic different from 2 and 3, Q r its right Martindale quotient ring, C its extended centroid, L a non-central Lie ideal of R and n 1 a fixed positive integer. Let α be an automorphism of the ring R . An additive map D : R R is called an α -derivation (or a skew derivation) on R if D ( x y ) = D ( x ) y + α ( x ) D ( y ) for all x , y R . An additive mapping F : R R is called a generalized α -derivation (or a generalized skew derivation) on R if there exists a skew derivation D on R such that F ( x y ) = F ( x ) y + α ( x ) D ( y ) for all x , y R . Let 𝔄 = 𝒜 be the triangular algebra consisting of unital algebras 𝒜 and over a commutative ring R with identity 1 and be a unital ( 𝒜 , ) -bimodule. An additive subgroup 𝔏 of 𝔄 is said to be a Lie ideal of 𝔄 if [ 𝔏 , 𝔄 ] 𝔏 . A non-central square closed Lie ideal 𝔏 of 𝔄 is known as an admissible Lie ideal. The main result of the present paper states that under certain restrictions on 𝔄 , every generalized Jordan triple higher derivation of 𝔏 into 𝔄 is a generalized higher derivation of 𝔏 into 𝔄 . ...

Finally, we apply these purely ring theoretic results to semi-simple Banach algebras. ...

Let 𝒳 be a Banach space of dimension n > 1 and 𝔄 ( 𝒳 ) be a standard operator algebra. Moreover, if d is linear and satisfies the above relation, then there exists an operator S 𝔄 and a linear mapping τ from 𝔄 into 𝔽 I satisfying τ ( [ [ U , V ] , W ] ) = 0 for all U , V , W 𝔄 , such that d ( U ) = S U - U S + τ ( U ) for all U 𝔄 .

Let h i ( k , n ) be the i -th ordered configuration space of all distinct points H 1 , ... , H h in the Grassmannian G r ( k , n ) of k -dimensional subspaces of n , whose sum is a subspace of dimension i . We prove that h i ( k , n ) is (when non empty) a complex submanifold of G r ( k , n ) h of dimension i ( n - i ) + h k ( i - k ) and its fundamental group is trivial if i = m i n ( n , h k ) , h k n and n > 2 and equal to the braid group of the sphere P 1 if n = 2 . Eventually we compute the fundamental group in the special case of hyperplane arrangements, i.e. k = n - 1 .

It is known that ( p ) is not amenable for p = 1,2,∞, but whether or not ( p ) is amenable for p ∈ (1,∞) ∖ 2 is an open problem. We show that, if ( p ) is amenable for p ∈ (1,∞), then so are ( ( p ) ) and ( ( p ) ) . Moreover, if ( ( p ) ) is amenable so is ( , ( E ) ) for any index set and for any infinite-dimensional p -space E; in particular, if ( ( p ) ) is amenable for p ∈ (1,∞), then so is ( ( p ² ) ) . We show that ( ( p ² ) ) is not amenable for p = 1,∞, but also that our methods fail us if p ∈ (1,∞). Finally, for p ∈ (1,2) and a free ultrafilter over...

In a Tychonoff space X , the point p X is called a C * -point if every real-valued continuous function on C { p } can be extended continuously to p . Every point in an extremally disconnected space is a C * -point. A classic example is the space 𝐖 * = ω 1 + 1 consisting of the countable ordinals together with ω 1 . The point ω 1 is known to be a C * -point as well as a P -point. We supply a characterization of C * -points in totally ordered spaces. The remainder of our time is aimed at studying when a point in a product space...

Let L ( H ) denote the algebra of all bounded linear operators on a complex infinite dimensional Hilbert space H . For A , B L ( H ) , the generalized derivation δ A , B and the multiplication operator M A , B are defined on L ( H ) by δ A , B ( X ) = A X - X B and M A , B ( X ) = A X B . In this paper, we give a characterization of bounded operators A and B such that the range of M A , B is closed. We present some sufficient conditions for δ A , B to have closed range. Some related results are also given.
