A Spectral Theory for Tensors

Edinah K. Gnang, Ahmed Elgammal, Vladimir Retakh (2011)

Annales de la faculté des sciences de Toulouse Mathématiques

In this paper we propose a general spectral theory for tensors. Our proposed factorization decomposes a tensor into a product of orthogonal and scaling tensors. At the same time, our factorization yields an expansion of a tensor as a summation of outer products of lower order tensors. Our proposed factorization shows the relationship between the eigen-objects and the generalised characteristic polynomials. Our framework is based on a consistent multilinear algebra which explains how to generalise...

A subclass of strongly clean rings

Orhan Gurgun, Sait Halicioglu and Burcu Ungor (2015)

Communications in Mathematics

In this paper, we introduce a subclass of strongly clean rings. Let R be a ring with identity, J be the Jacobson radical of R , and let J # denote the set of all elements of R which are nilpotent in R / J . An element a R is called very J # -clean provided that there exists an idempotent e R such that a e = e a and a - e or a + e is an element of J # . A ring R is said to be very J # -clean in case every element in R is very J # -clean. We prove that every very J # -clean ring is strongly π -rad clean and has stable range one. It is shown...

A variant of the reciprocal super Catalan matrix

Emrah Kılıç, Ilker Akkus, Gonca Kızılaslan (2015)

Special Matrices

Recently Prodinger [8] considered the reciprocal super Catalan matrix and gave explicit formulæ for its LU-decomposition, the LU-decomposition of its inverse, and obtained some related matrices. For all results, q-analogues were also presented. In this paper, we define and study a variant of the reciprocal super Catalan matrix with two additional parameters. Explicit formulæ for its LU-decomposition, LUdecomposition of its inverse and the Cholesky decomposition are obtained. For all results, q-analogues...

Aggregation/disaggregation method for safety models

Štěpán Klapka, Petr Mayer (2002)

Applications of Mathematics

The paper concerns the possibilities for mathematical modelling of safety related systems (equipment oriented on safety). Some mathematical models have been required by the present European Standards for the railway transport. We are interested in the possibility of using Markov’s models to meet these Standards. In the text an example of using that method in the interlocking equipment life cycle is given. An efficient aggregation/disaggregation method for computing some characteristics of Markov...

All about the ⊥ with its applications in the linear statistical models

Augustyn Markiewicz, Simo Puntanen (2015)

Open Mathematics

For an n x m real matrix A the matrix A⊥ is defined as a matrix spanning the orthocomplement of the column space of A, when the orthogonality is defined with respect to the standard inner product ⟨x, y⟩ = x'y. In this paper we collect together various properties of the ⊥ operation and its applications in linear statistical models. Results covering the more general inner products are also considered. We also provide a rather extensive list of references
