Families of jacobian manifolds and characteristic classes of surface bundles. I

Shigeyuki Morita (1989)

Annales de l'institut Fourier

In our previous work we have defined the notion of characteristic classes of surface bundles, which are differentiable fibre bundles whose fibres are closed oriented surfaces. In this paper we derive new relations between these characteristic classes by considering a canonical embedding of a given surface bundle with cross section to its associated family of Jacobian manifolds. As a key technical step we determine the first cohomology group of the mapping class group of oriented surfaces with coefficients...

FC-gruppi e proiettività

Carmela Musella (2001)

Bollettino dell'Unione Matematica Italiana

Some lattice properties of FC-groups and generalized FC-groups are considered in this paper.

Finite groups with a unique nonlinear nonfaithful irreducible character

Ali Iranmanesh, Amin Saeidi (2011)

Archivum Mathematicum

In this paper, we consider finite groups with precisely one nonlinear nonfaithful irreducible character. We show that the groups of order 16 with nilpotency class 3 are the only p -groups with this property. Moreover we completely characterize the nilpotent groups with this property. Also we show that if G is a group with a nontrivial center which possesses precisely one nonlinear nonfaithful irreducible character then G is solvable.

Finite simple groups of Lie type as expanders

Alexander Lubotzky (2011)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

We prove that all finite simple groups of Lie type, with the exception of the Suzuki groups, can be made into a family of expanders in a uniform way. This confirms a conjecture of Babai, Kantor and Lubotzky from 1989, which has already been proved by Kassabov for sufficiently large rank. The bounded rank case is deduced here from a uniform result for S L 2 which is obtained by combining results of Selberg and Drinfeld via an explicit construction of Ramanujan graphs by Lubotzky, Samuels and Vishne.
