Proximality in Pisot tiling spaces

Marcy Barge, Beverly Diamond (2007)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

A substitution φ is strong Pisot if its abelianization matrix is nonsingular and all eigenvalues except the Perron-Frobenius eigenvalue have modulus less than one. For strong Pisot φ that satisfies a no cycle condition and for which the translation flow on the tiling space φ has pure discrete spectrum, we describe the collection φ P of pairs of proximal tilings in φ in a natural way as a substitution tiling space. We show that if ψ is another such substitution, then φ and ψ are homeomorphic if and...

Puzzles of Quasi-Finite Type, Zeta Functions and Symbolic Dynamics for Multi-Dimensional Maps

Jérôme Buzzi (2010)

Annales de l’institut Fourier

Entropy-expanding transformations define a class of smooth dynamics generalizing interval maps with positive entropy and expanding maps. In this work, we build a symbolic representation of those dynamics in terms of puzzles (in Yoccoz’s sense), thus avoiding a connectedness condition, hard to satisfy in higher dimensions. Those puzzles are controled by a «constraint entropy» bounded by the hypersurface entropy of the aforementioned transformations. The analysis of those puzzles rests on a «stably...

Quantitative recurrence in two-dimensional extended processes

Françoise Pène, Benoît Saussol (2009)

Annales de l'I.H.P. Probabilités et statistiques

Under some mild condition, a random walk in the plane is recurrent. In particular each trajectory is dense, and a natural question is how much time one needs to approach a given small neighbourhood of the origin. We address this question in the case of some extended dynamical systems similar to planar random walks, including ℤ2-extension of mixing subshifts of finite type. We define a pointwise recurrence rate and relate it to the dimension of the process, and establish a result of convergence in...

Quantization Dimension Function and Ergodic Measure with Bounded Distortion

Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury (2009)

Bulletin of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Mathematics

The quantization dimension function for the image measure of a shift-invariant ergodic measure with bounded distortion on a self-conformal set is determined, and its relationship to the temperature function of the thermodynamic formalism arising in multifractal analysis is established.

Quasi-compactness and mean ergodicity for Markov kernels acting on weighted supremum normed spaces

Loïc Hervé (2008)

Annales de l'I.H.P. Probabilités et statistiques

Let P be a Markov kernel on a measurable space E with countably generated σ-algebra, let w:E→[1, +∞[ such that Pw≤Cw with C≥0, and let w be the space of measurable functions onE satisfying ‖f‖w=sup{w(x)−1|f(x)|, x∈E}<+∞. We prove that Pis quasi-compact on ( w , · w ) if and only if, for all f w , ( 1 n k = 1 n P k f ) n contains a subsequence converging in w toΠf=∑di=1μi(f)vi, where the vi’s are non-negative bounded measurable functions on E and the μi’s are probability distributions on E. In particular, when the space of...

Random orderings and unique ergodicity of automorphism groups

Omer Angel, Alexander S. Kechris, Russell Lyons (2014)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

We show that the only random orderings of finite graphs that are invariant under isomorphism and induced subgraph are the uniform random orderings. We show how this implies the unique ergodicity of the automorphism group of the random graph. We give similar theorems for other structures, including, for example, metric spaces. These give the first examples of uniquely ergodic groups, other than compact groups and extremely amenable groups, after Glasner andWeiss’s example of the group of all permutations...

Random permutations and unique fully supported ergodicity for the Euler adic transformation

Sarah Bailey Frick, Karl Petersen (2008)

Annales de l'I.H.P. Probabilités et statistiques

There is only one fully supported ergodic invariant probability measure for the adic transformation on the space of infinite paths in the graph that underlies the eulerian numbers. This result may partially justify a frequent assumption about the equidistribution of random permutations.

Ratner's property for special flows over irrational rotations under functions of bounded variation. II

Adam Kanigowski (2014)

Colloquium Mathematicae

We consider special flows over the rotation on the circle by an irrational α under roof functions of bounded variation. The roof functions, in the Lebesgue decomposition, are assumed to have a continuous singular part coming from a quasi-similar Cantor set (including the devil's staircase case). Moreover, a finite number of discontinuities is allowed. Assuming that α has bounded partial quotients, we prove that all such flows are weakly mixing and enjoy the weak Ratner property. Moreover, we provide...

Refinement type equations: sources and results

Rafał Kapica, Janusz Morawiec (2013)

Banach Center Publications

It has been proved recently that the two-direction refinement equation of the form f ( x ) = n c n , 1 f ( k x - n ) + n c n , - 1 f ( - k x - n ) can be used in wavelet theory for constructing two-direction wavelets, biorthogonal wavelets, wavelet packages, wavelet frames and others. The two-direction refinement equation generalizes the classical refinement equation f ( x ) = n c f ( k x - n ) , which has been used in many areas of mathematics with important applications. The following continuous extension of the classical refinement equation f ( x ) = c ( y ) f ( k x - y ) d y has also various interesting applications....
