Feedback, trace and fixed-point semantics

P. Katis, Nicoletta Sabadini, Robert F. C. Walters (2002)

RAIRO - Theoretical Informatics and Applications - Informatique Théorique et Applications

We introduce a notion of category with feedback-with-delay, closely related to the notion of traced monoidal category, and show that the Circ construction of [15] is the free category with feedback on a symmetric monoidal category. Combining with the Int construction of Joyal et al. [12] we obtain a description of the free compact closed category on a symmetric monoidal category. We thus obtain a categorical analogue of the classical localization of a ring with respect to a multiplicative subset....

Finite automata and algebraic extensions of function fields

Kiran S. Kedlaya (2006)

Journal de Théorie des Nombres de Bordeaux

We give an automata-theoretic description of the algebraic closure of the rational function field 𝔽 q ( t ) over a finite field 𝔽 q , generalizing a result of Christol. The description occurs within the Hahn-Mal’cev-Neumann field of “generalized power series” over 𝔽 q . In passing, we obtain a characterization of well-ordered sets of rational numbers whose base p expansions are generated by a finite automaton, and exhibit some techniques for computing in the algebraic closure; these include an adaptation to positive...

Fixed points of endomorphisms of certain free products

Pedro V. Silva (2012)

RAIRO - Theoretical Informatics and Applications - Informatique Théorique et Applications

The fixed point submonoid of an endomorphism of a free product of a free monoid and cyclic groups is proved to be rational using automata-theoretic techniques. Maslakova’s result on the computability of the fixed point subgroup of a free group automorphism is generalized to endomorphisms of free products of a free monoid and a free group which are automorphisms of the maximal subgroup.

Free group languages : rational versus recognizable

Pedro V. Silva (2004)

RAIRO - Theoretical Informatics and Applications - Informatique Théorique et Applications

We provide alternative proofs and algorithms for results proved by Sénizergues on rational and recognizable free group languages. We consider two different approaches to the basic problem of deciding recognizability for rational free group languages following two fully independent paths: the symmetrification method (using techniques inspired by the study of inverse automata and inverse monoids) and the right stabilizer method (a general approach generalizable to other classes of groups). Several...

From indexed grammars to generating functions

Jared Adams, Eric Freden, Marni Mishna (2013)

RAIRO - Theoretical Informatics and Applications - Informatique Théorique et Applications

We extend the DSV method of computing the growth series of an unambiguous context-free language to the larger class of indexed languages. We illustrate the technique with numerous examples.
