Another approach to characterizations of generalized triangle inequalities in normed spaces

Tamotsu Izumida, Ken-Ichi Mitani, Kichi-Suke Saito (2014)

Open Mathematics

In this paper, we consider a generalized triangle inequality of the following type: x 1 + + x n p x 1 p μ 1 + + x 2 p μ n f o r a l l x 1 , ... , x n X , where (X, ‖·‖) is a normed space, (µ1, ..., µn) ∈ ℝn and p > 0. By using ψ-direct sums of Banach spaces, we present another approach to characterizations of the above inequality which is given by [Dadipour F., Moslehian M.S., Rassias J.M., Takahasi S.-E., Nonlinear Anal., 2012, 75(2), 735–741].

Answer to a question by M. Feder about K(X,Y).

Revista Matemática de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid

We show that a Banach space constructed by Bourgain-Delbaen in 1980 answers a question put by Feder in 1982 about spaces of compact operators.

Asplund Functions and Projectional Resolutions of the Identity

K. Tang. Let f be an Asplund function on a Banach space X. We prove that (i) the subspace Y := sp ∂f(X) has a projectional resolution of the identity, and that (ii) if X is weakly Lindel¨of determined, then X admits a projectional...

Averages of uniformly continuous retractions

A. Jiménez-Vargas, J. Mena-Jurado, R. Nahum, J. Navarro-Pascual (1999)

Studia Mathematica

Let X be an infinite-dimensional complex normed space, and let B and S be its closed unit ball and unit sphere, respectively. We prove that the identity map on B can be expressed as an average of three uniformly retractions of B onto S. Moreover, for every 0≤ r < 1, the three retractions are Lipschitz on rB. We also show that a stronger version where the retractions are required to be Lipschitz does not hold.

Baire classes of complex L 1 -preduals

Pavel Ludvík, Jiří Spurný (2015)

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

Let X be a complex L 1 -predual, non-separable in general. We investigate extendability of complex-valued bounded homogeneous Baire- α functions on the set ext B X * of the extreme points of the dual unit ball B X * to the whole unit ball B X * . As a corollary we show that, given α [ 1 , ω 1 ) , the intrinsic α -th Baire class of X can be identified with the space of bounded homogeneous Baire- α functions on the set ext B X * when ext B X * satisfies certain topological assumptions. The paper is intended to be a complex counterpart to the same authors’...

Ball remotal subspaces of Banach spaces

Pradipta Bandyopadhyay, Bor-Luh Lin, T. S. S. R. K. Rao (2009)

Colloquium Mathematicae

We study Banach spaces X with subspaces Y whose unit ball is densely remotal in X. We show that for several classes of Banach spaces, the unit ball of the space of compact operators is densely remotal in the space of bounded operators. We also show that for several classical Banach spaces, the unit ball is densely remotal in the duals of higher even order. We show that for a separable remotal set E ⊆ X, the set of Bochner integrable functions with values in E is a remotal set in L¹(μ,X).

Banach spaces, à la recherche du temps perdu.

Extracta Mathematicae

What follows is the opening conference of the late night seminar at the III Conference on Banach Spaces held at Jarandilla de la Vera, Cáceres. Maybe the reader should not take everything what follows too seriously: after all, it was designed for a friendly seminar, late in the night, talking about things around a table shared by whisky, preprints and almonds. Maybe the reader should not completely discard it. Be as it may, it seems to me by now that everything arrives in the nick of time. A twisted...
