Brill–Noether loci for divisors on irregular varieties

Margarida Mendes Lopes, Rita Pardini, Pietro Pirola (2014)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

Similarity:

We take up the study of the Brill-Noether loci W r ( L , X ) : = { η Pic 0 ( X ) | h 0 ( L η ) r + 1 } , where X is a smooth projective variety of dimension > 1 , L Pic ( X ) , and r 0 is an integer. By studying the infinitesimal structure of these loci and the Petri map (defined in analogy with the case of curves), we obtain lower bounds for h 0 ( K D ) , where D is a divisor that moves linearly on a smooth projective variety X of maximal Albanese dimension. In this way we sharpen the results of [Xi] and we generalize them to dimension > 2 . In the 2 -dimensional case...

Divisors in global analytic sets

Francesca Acquistapace, A. Díaz-Cano (2011)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

Similarity:

We prove that any divisor Y of a global analytic set X n has a generic equation, that is, there is an analytic function vanishing on Y with multiplicity one along each irreducible component of Y . We also prove that there are functions with arbitrary multiplicities along Y . The main result states that if X is pure dimensional, Y is locally principal, X / Y is not connected and Y represents the zero class in H q - 1 ( X , 2 ) then the divisor Y is globally principal.

Monodromy of a family of hypersurfaces

Vincenzo Di Gennaro, Davide Franco (2009)

Annales scientifiques de l'École Normale Supérieure

Similarity:

Let Y be an ( m + 1 ) -dimensional irreducible smooth complex projective variety embedded in a projective space. Let Z be a closed subscheme of Y , and δ be a positive integer such that Z , Y ( δ ) is generated by global sections. Fix an integer d δ + 1 , and assume the general divisor X | H 0 ( Y , Z , Y ( d ) ) | is smooth. Denote by H m ( X ; ) Z van the quotient of H m ( X ; ) by the cohomology of Y and also by the cycle classes of the irreducible components of dimension m of Z . In the present paper we prove that the monodromy representation on H m ( X ; ) Z van for the family...

Variations on a question concerning the degrees of divisors of x n - 1

Lola Thompson (2014)

Journal de Théorie des Nombres de Bordeaux

Similarity:

In this paper, we examine a natural question concerning the divisors of the polynomial x n - 1 : “How often does x n - 1 have a divisor of every degree between 1 and n ?” In a previous paper, we considered the situation when x n - 1 is factored in [ x ] . In this paper, we replace [ x ] with 𝔽 p [ x ] , where p is an arbitrary-but-fixed prime. We also consider those n where this condition holds for all p .

Annali della Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa - Classe di Scienze

Similarity:

Let D be an open set of a Stein manifold X of dimension n such that H k ( D , 𝒪 ) = 0 for 2 k n - 1 . We prove that D is Stein if and only if every topologically trivial holomorphic line bundle L on D is associated to some Cartier divisor 𝔡 on D .

On the Picard number of divisors in Fano manifolds

Cinzia Casagrande (2012)

Annales scientifiques de l'École Normale Supérieure

Similarity:

Let  X be a complex Fano manifold of arbitrary dimension, and D a prime divisor in  X . We consider the image 𝒩 1 ( D , X ) of  𝒩 1 ( D ) in  𝒩 1 ( X ) under the natural push-forward of 1 -cycles. We show that ρ X - ρ D codim 𝒩 1 ( D , X ) 8 . Moreover if codim 𝒩 1 ( D , X ) 3 , then either X S × T where S is a Del Pezzo surface, or codim 𝒩 1 ( D , X ) = 3 and X has a fibration in Del Pezzo surfaces onto a Fano manifold T such that ρ X - ρ T = 4 .

Singularities of 2 Θ -divisors in the jacobian

Christian Pauly, Emma Previato (2001)

Bulletin de la Société Mathématique de France

Similarity:

We consider the linear system | 2 Θ 0 | of second order theta functions over the Jacobian J C of a non-hyperelliptic curve C . A result by J.Fay says that a divisor D | 2 Θ 0 | contains the origin 𝒪 J C with multiplicity 4 if and only if D contains the surface C - C = { 𝒪 ( p - q ) p , q C } J C . In this paper we generalize Fay’s result and some previous work by R.C.Gunning. More precisely, we describe the relationship between divisors containing 𝒪 with multiplicity 6 , divisors containing the fourfold C 2 - C 2 = { 𝒪 ( p + q - r - s ) p , q , r , s C } , and divisors singular along C - C , using...

On the birational gonalities of smooth curves

E. Ballico (2014)

Annales Universitatis Mariae Curie-Sklodowska, sectio A – Mathematica

Similarity:

Let C be a smooth curve of genus g . For each positive integer r the birational r -gonality s r ( C ) of C is the minimal integer t such that there is L Pic t ( C ) with h 0 ( C , L ) = r + 1 . Fix an integer r 3 . In this paper we prove the existence of an integer g r such that for every integer g g r there is a smooth curve C of genus g with s r + 1 ( C ) / ( r + 1 ) > s r ( C ) / r , i.e. in the sequence of all birational gonalities of C at least one of the slope inequalities fails.

A class of non-rational surface singularities with bijective Nash map

Camille Plénat, Patrick Popescu-Pampu (2006)

Bulletin de la Société Mathématique de France

Similarity:

Let ( 𝒮 , 0 ) be a germ of complex analytic normal surface. On its minimal resolution, we consider the reduced exceptional divisor E and its irreducible components E i , i I . The Nash map associates to each irreducible component C k of the space of arcs through 0 on 𝒮 the unique component of E cut by the strict transform of the generic arc in C k . Nash proved its injectivity and asked if it was bijective. As a particular case of our main theorem, we prove that this is the case if E · E i < 0 for any  i I . ...

On coverings of simple abelian varieties

Olivier Debarre (2006)

Bulletin de la Société Mathématique de France

Similarity:

To any finite covering f : Y X of degree d between smooth complex projective manifolds, one associates a vector bundle E f of rank d - 1 on X whose total space contains Y . It is known that E f is ample when X is a projective space ([Lazarsfeld 1980]), a Grassmannian ([Manivel 1997]), or a Lagrangian Grassmannian ([Kim Maniel 1999]). We show an analogous result when X is a simple abelian variety and f does not factor through any nontrivial isogeny X ' X . This result is obtained by showing that E f is M -regular...

Steinness of bundles with fiber a Reinhardt bounded domain

Karl Oeljeklaus, Dan Zaffran (2006)

Bulletin de la Société Mathématique de France

Similarity:

Let E denote a holomorphic bundle with fiber D and with basis B . Both D and B are assumed to be Stein. For D a Reinhardt bounded domain of dimension d = 2 or 3 , we give a necessary and sufficient condition on D for the existence of a non-Stein such E (Theorem 1 ); for d = 2 , we give necessary and sufficient criteria for E to be Stein (Theorem 2 ). For D a Reinhardt bounded domain of any dimension not intersecting any coordinate hyperplane, we give a sufficient criterion for E to be Stein (Theorem...

The local lifting problem for actions of finite groups on curves

Ted Chinburg, Robert Guralnick, David Harbater (2011)

Annales scientifiques de l'École Normale Supérieure

Similarity:

Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic p > 0 . We study obstructions to lifting to characteristic 0 the faithful continuous action φ of a finite group G on k [ [ t ] ] . To each such  φ a theorem of Katz and Gabber associates an action of G on a smooth projective curve Y over k . We say that the KGB obstruction of φ vanishes if G acts on a smooth projective curve X in characteristic  0 in such a way that X / H and Y / H have the same genus for all subgroups H G . We determine for which G the KGB...

On surfaces with p 𝑔 = q = 1 and non-ruled bicanonical involution

Carlos Rito (2007)

Annali della Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa - Classe di Scienze

Similarity:

This paper classifies surfaces S of general type with p g = q = 1 having an involution i such that S / i has non-negative Kodaira dimension and that the bicanonical map of S factors through the double cover induced by i . It is shown that S / i is regular and either: a) the Albanese fibration of S is of genus 2 or b) S has no genus 2 fibration and S / i is birational to a K 3 surface. For case a) a list of possibilities and examples are given. An example for case b) with K 2 = 6 is also constructed.

An effective proof of the hyperelliptic Shafarevich conjecture

Let C be a hyperelliptic curve of genus g 1 over a number field K with good reduction outside a finite set of places S of K . We prove that C has a Weierstrass model over the ring of integers of K with height effectively bounded only in terms of g , S and K . In particular, we obtain that for any given number field K , finite set of places S of K and integer g 1 one can in principle determine the set of K -isomorphism classes of hyperelliptic curves over K of genus g with good reduction outside...

Calculation of the greatest common divisor of perturbed polynomials

Zítko, Jan, Eliaš, Ján

Similarity:

The coefficients of the greatest common divisor of two polynomials f and g (GCD ( f , g ) ) can be obtained from the Sylvester subresultant matrix S j ( f , g ) transformed to lower triangular form, where 1 j d and d = deg(GCD ( f , g ) ) needs to be computed. Firstly, it is supposed that the coefficients of polynomials are given exactly. Transformations of S j ( f , g ) for an arbitrary allowable j are in details described and an algorithm for the calculation of the GCD ( f , g ) is formulated. If inexact polynomials are given, then an approximate...

A pure smoothness condition for Radó’s theorem for α -analytic functions

Let Ω n be a bounded, simply connected -convex domain. Let α + n and let f be a function on Ω which is separately C 2 α j - 1 -smooth with respect to z j (by which we mean jointly C 2 α j - 1 -smooth with respect to Re z j , Im z j ). If f is α -analytic on Ω f - 1 ( 0 ) , then f is α -analytic on Ω . The result is well-known for the case α i = 1 , 1 i n , even when f a priori is only known to be continuous.
