Amenable groups and cellular automata

Tullio G. Ceccherini-Silberstein, Antonio Machi, Fabio Scarabotti (1999)

Annales de l'institut Fourier

We show that the theorems of Moore and Myhill hold for cellular automata whose universes are Cayley graphs of amenable finitely generated groups. This extends the analogous result of A. Machi and F. Mignosi “Garden of Eden configurations for cellular automata on Cayley graphs of groups” for groups of sub-exponential growth.

Amenable hyperbolic groups

Pierre-Emmanuel Caprace, Yves de Cornulier, Nicolas Monod, Romain Tessera (2015)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

We give a complete characterization of the locally compact groups that are non elementary Gromov-hyperbolic and amenable. They coincide with the class of mapping tori of discrete or continuous one-parameter groups of compacting automorphisms. We moreover give a description of all Gromov-hyperbolic locally compact groups with a cocompact amenable subgroup: modulo a compact normal subgroup, these turn out to be either rank one simple Lie groups, or automorphism groups of semiregular trees acting doubly...

Amenable, transitive and faithful actions of groups acting on trees

Pierre Fima (2014)

Annales de l’institut Fourier

We study under which condition an amalgamated free product or an HNN-extension over a finite subgroup admits an amenable, transitive and faithful action on an infinite countable set. We show that such an action exists if the initial groups admit an amenable and almost free action with infinite orbits (e.g. virtually free groups or infinite amenable groups). Our result relies on the Baire category Theorem. We extend the result to groups acting on trees.

Approximate and weak amenability of certain Banach algebras

P. Bharucha, R. J. Loy (2010)

Studia Mathematica

The notions of approximate amenability and weak amenability in Banach algebras are formally stronger than that of approximate weak amenability. We demonstrate an example confirming that approximate weak amenability is indeed actually weaker than either approximate or weak amenability themselves. As a consequence, we examine the (failure of) approximate amenability for p -sums of finite-dimensional normed algebras.

Approximate diagonals and Følner conditions for amenable group and semigroup algebras

Ross Stokke (2004)

Studia Mathematica

We study the relationship between the classical invariance properties of amenable locally compact groups G and the approximate diagonals possessed by their associated group algebras L¹(G). From the existence of a weak form of approximate diagonal for L¹(G) we provide a direct proof that G is amenable. Conversely, we give a formula for constructing a strong form of approximate diagonal for any amenable locally compact group. In particular we have a new proof of Johnson's Theorem: A locally compact...

Character Connes amenability of dual Banach algebras

Mohammad Ramezanpour (2018)

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

We study the notion of character Connes amenability of dual Banach algebras and show that if A is an Arens regular Banach algebra, then A * * is character Connes amenable if and only if A is character amenable, which will resolve positively Runde’s problem for this concept of amenability. We then characterize character Connes amenability of various dual Banach algebras related to locally compact groups. We also investigate character Connes amenability of Lau product and module extension of Banach algebras....

Character contractibility of Banach algebras and homological properties of Banach modules

Rasoul Nasr-Isfahani, Sima Soltani Renani (2011)

Studia Mathematica

Let 𝓐 be a Banach algebra and let ϕ be a nonzero character on 𝓐. We give some necessary and sufficient conditions for the left ϕ-contractibility of 𝓐 as well as several hereditary properties. We also study relations between homological properties of some Banach left 𝓐-modules, the left ϕ-contractibility and the right ϕ-amenability of 𝓐. Finally, we characterize the left character contractibility of various Banach algebras related to locally compact groups.

Character inner amenability of certain Banach algebras

H. R. Ebrahimi Vishki, A. R. Khoddami (2011)

Colloquium Mathematicae

Character inner amenability for a certain class of Banach algebras including projective tensor products, Lau products and module extensions is investigated. Some illuminating examples are given.

Character pseudo-amenability of Banach algebras

Rasoul Nasr-Isfahani, Mehdi Nemati (2013)

Colloquium Mathematicae

Let 𝓐 be a Banach algebra and let ϕ be a nonzero character on 𝓐. We introduce and study a new notion of amenability for 𝓐 based on existence of a ϕ-approximate diagonal by modifying the concepts of ϕ-amenability and pseudo-amenability. We then apply these results to characterize ϕ-pseudo-amenability of various Banach algebras related to locally compact groups such as group algebras, measure algebras, certain dual algebras and Lebesgue-Fourier algebras.
