Copies of lp in tensor products.

Fernando Blasco (2000)

Extracta Mathematicae

The problem of finding complemented copies of lp in another space is a classical problem in Functional Analysis and has been studied from different points of view in the literature. Here we pay attention to complementation of lp in an n-fold tensor product of lq spaces because we were lead to that result in the study of Grothendieck's Problème des topologies as we shall comment later.

Dichotomies for 𝐂 0 ( X ) and 𝐂 b ( X ) spaces

Szymon Głąb, Filip Strobin (2013)

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

Jachymski showed that the set ( x , y ) 𝐜 0 × 𝐜 0 : i = 1 n α ( i ) x ( i ) y ( i ) n = 1 is bounded is either a meager subset of 𝐜 0 × 𝐜 0 or is equal to 𝐜 0 × 𝐜 0 . In the paper we generalize this result by considering more general spaces than 𝐜 0 , namely 𝐂 0 ( X ) , the space of all continuous functions which vanish at infinity, and 𝐂 b ( X ) , the space of all continuous bounded functions. Moreover, we replace the meagerness by σ -porosity.

Diophantine approximation in Banach spaces

Lior Fishman, David Simmons, Mariusz Urbański (2014)

Journal de Théorie des Nombres de Bordeaux

In this paper, we extend the theory of simultaneous Diophantine approximation to infinite dimensions. Moreover, we discuss Dirichlet-type theorems in a very general framework and define what it means for such a theorem to be optimal. We show that optimality is implied by but does not imply the existence of badly approximable points.

Distances to spaces of affine Baire-one functions

Jiří Spurný (2010)

Studia Mathematica

Let E be a Banach space and let ( B E * ) and ( B E * ) denote the space of all Baire-one and affine Baire-one functions on the dual unit ball B E * , respectively. We show that there exists a separable L₁-predual E such that there is no quantitative relation between d i s t ( f , ( B E * ) ) and d i s t ( f , ( B E * ) ) , where f is an affine function on B E * . If the Banach space E satisfies some additional assumption, we prove the existence of some such dependence.

Dual spaces generated by the interior of the set of norm attaining functionals

Maria D. Acosta, Julio Becerra Guerrero, Manuel Ruiz Galán (2002)

Studia Mathematica

We characterize some isomorphic properties of Banach spaces in terms of the set of norm attaining functionals. The main result states that a Banach space is reflexive as soon as it does not contain ℓ₁ and the dual unit ball is the w*-closure of the convex hull of elements contained in the "uniform" interior of the set of norm attaining functionals. By assuming a very weak isometric condition (lack of roughness) instead of not containing ℓ₁, we also obtain a similar result. As a consequence of the...

Effective constructions of separable quotients of Banach spaces.

Marek Wójtowicz (1997)

Collectanea Mathematica

A simple way of obtaining separable quotients in the class of weakly countably determined (WCD) Banach spaces is presented. A large class of Banach lattices, possessing as a quotient c0, l1, l2, or a reflexive Banach space with an unconditional Schauder basis, is indicated.

Embedding c 0 in bvca ( Σ , X )

Juan Carlos Ferrando, L. M. Sánchez Ruiz (2007)

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

If ( Ω , Σ ) is a measurable space and X a Banach space, we provide sufficient conditions on Σ and X in order to guarantee that b v c a ( Σ , X ) , the Banach space of all X -valued countably additive measures of bounded variation equipped with the variation norm, contains a copy of c 0 if and only if X does.

Essentially Incomparable Banach Spaces of Continuous Functions

Rogério Augusto dos Santos Fajardo (2010)

Bulletin of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Mathematics

We construct, under Axiom ♢, a family ( C ( K ξ ) ) ξ < 2 ( 2 ω ) of indecomposable Banach spaces with few operators such that every operator from C ( K ξ ) into C ( K η ) is weakly compact, for all ξ ≠ η. In particular, these spaces are pairwise essentially incomparable. Assuming no additional set-theoretic axiom, we obtain this result with size 2 ω instead of 2 ( 2 ω ) .
