A comparative analysis of Bernstein type estimates for the derivative of multivariate polynomials

Szilárd Gy. Révész (2006)

Annales Polonici Mathematici

We compare the yields of two methods to obtain Bernstein type pointwise estimates for the derivative of a multivariate polynomial in a domain where the polynomial is assumed to have sup norm at most 1. One method, due to Sarantopoulos, relies on inscribing ellipses in a convex domain K. The other, pluripotential-theoretic approach, mainly due to Baran, works for even more general sets, and uses the pluricomplex Green function (the Zaharjuta-Siciak extremal function). When the inscribed ellipse method...

A conditional quasi-greedy basis of l₁

S. J. Dilworth, David Mitra (2001)

Studia Mathematica

We show that the Lindenstrauss basic sequence in l₁ may be used to construct a conditional quasi-greedy basis of l₁, thus answering a question of Wojtaszczyk. We further show that the sequence of coefficient functionals for this basis is not quasi-greedy.

A converse to Amir-Lindenstrauss theorem in complex Banach spaces.

Ondrej F. K. Kalenda (2006)

RACSAM

We show that a complex Banach space is weakly Lindelöf determined if and only if the dual unit ball of any equivalent norm is weak* Valdivia compactum. We deduce that a complex Banach space X is weakly Lindelöf determined if and only if any nonseparable Banach space isomorphic to a complemented subspace of X admits a projectional resolution of the identity. These results complete the previous ones on real spaces.

A description of Banach space-valued Orlicz hearts

Coenraad Labuschagne, Theresa Offwood (2010)

Open Mathematics

Let Y be a Banach space, (Ω, Σ; μ) a probability space and φ a finite Young function. It is shown that the Y-valued Orlicz heart H φ(μ, Y) is isometrically isomorphic to the l-completed tensor product H ϕ μ ˜ l Y of the scalar-valued Orlicz heart Hφ(μ) and Y, in the sense of Chaney and Schaefer. As an application, a characterization is given of the equality of H ϕ μ ˜ l Y * and H ϕ μ * ˜ l Y * in terms of the Radon-Nikodým property on Y. Convergence of norm-bounded martingales in H φ(μ, Y) is characterized in terms of the Radon-Nikodým...

A dichotomy on Schreier sets

Robert Judd (1999)

Studia Mathematica

We show that the Schreier sets S α ( α < ω 1 ) have the following dichotomy property. For every hereditary collection ℱ of finite subsets of ℱ, either there exists infinite M = ( m i ) i = 1 such that S α ( M ) = m i : i E : E S α , or there exist infinite M = ( m i ) i = 1 , N such that [ N ] ( M ) = m i : i F : F a n d F N S α .

A differential equation related to the l p -norms

Jacek Bojarski, Tomasz Małolepszy, Janusz Matkowski (2011)

Annales Polonici Mathematici

Let p ∈ (1,∞). The question of existence of a curve in ℝ₊² starting at (0,0) and such that at every point (x,y) of this curve, the l p -distance of the points (x,y) and (0,0) is equal to the Euclidean length of the arc of this curve between these points is considered. This problem reduces to a nonlinear differential equation. The existence and uniqueness of solutions is proved and nonelementary explicit solutions are given.

A Discretized Approach to W. T. Gowers' Game

V. Kanellopoulos, K. Tyros (2010)

Bulletin of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Mathematics

We give an alternative proof of W. T. Gowers' theorem on block bases by reducing it to a discrete analogue on specific countable nets. We also give a Ramsey type result on k-tuples of block sequences in a normed linear space with a Schauder basis.

A disjointness type property of conditional expectation operators

Beata Randrianantoanina (2005)

Colloquium Mathematicae

We give a characterization of conditional expectation operators through a disjointness type property similar to band-preserving operators. We say that the operator T:X→ X on a Banach lattice X is semi-band-preserving if and only if for all f, g ∈ X, f ⊥ Tg implies that Tf ⊥ Tg. We prove that when X is a purely atomic Banach lattice, then an operator T on X is a weighted conditional expectation operator if and only if T is semi-band-preserving.
