Ergodic theorems in fully symmetric spaces of τ-measurable operators

Vladimir Chilin, Semyon Litvinov (2015)

Studia Mathematica

Junge and Xu (2007), employing the technique of noncommutative interpolation, established a maximal ergodic theorem in noncommutative L p -spaces, 1 < p < ∞, and derived corresponding maximal ergodic inequalities and individual ergodic theorems. In this article, we derive maximal ergodic inequalities in noncommutative L p -spaces directly from the results of Yeadon (1977) and apply them to prove corresponding individual and Besicovitch weighted ergodic theorems. Then we extend these results to noncommutative...

Every separable L₁-predual is complemented in a C*-algebra

Wolfgang Lusky (2004)

Studia Mathematica

We show that every separable complex L₁-predual space X is contractively complemented in the CAR-algebra. As an application we deduce that the open unit ball of X is a bounded homogeneous symmetric domain.

Existence of infinite-dimensional Lie algebra for a unitary group on a Hilbert space and related aspects

Hiroshi Ando, Yasumichi Matsuzawa (2011)

Banach Center Publications

We show that for any strongly closed subgroup of a unitary group of a finite von Neumann algebra, there exists a canonical Lie algebra which is complete with respect to the strong resolvent topology. Our analysis is based on the comparison between measure topology induced by the tracial state and the strong resolvent topology we define on the particular space of closed operators on the Hilbert space. This is an expository article of the paper by both authors in Hokkaido Math. J. 41 (2012), 31-99,...

Existentially closed II₁ factors

Ilijas Farah, Isaac Goldbring, Bradd Hart, David Sherman (2016)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

We examine the properties of existentially closed ( ω -embeddable) II₁ factors. In particular, we use the fact that every automorphism of an existentially closed ( ω -embeddable) II₁ factor is approximately inner to prove that Th() is not model-complete. We also show that Th() is complete for both finite and infinite forcing and use the latter result to prove that there exist continuum many nonisomorphic existentially closed models of Th().

Explicit computations of all finite index bimodules for a family of II 1 factors

Stefaan Vaes (2008)

Annales scientifiques de l'École Normale Supérieure

We study II 1 factors M and N associated with good generalized Bernoulli actions of groups having an infinite almost normal subgroup with the relative property (T). We prove the following rigidity result : every finite index M - N -bimodule (in particular, every isomorphism between M and N ) is described by a commensurability of the groups involved and a commensurability of their actions. The fusion algebra of finite index M - M -bimodules is identified with an extended Hecke fusion algebra, providing the...
