Characterization of weak type by the entropy distribution of r-nuclear operators

Martin Defant, Marius Junge (1993)

Studia Mathematica

The dual of a Banach space X is of weak type p if and only if the entropy numbers of an r-nuclear operator with values in a Banach space of weak type q belong to the Lorentz sequence space s , r with 1/s + 1/p + 1/q = 1 + 1/r (0 < r < 1, 1 ≤ p, q ≤ 2). It is enough to test this for Y = X*. This extends results of Carl, König and Kühn.

Compact embeddings of Brézis-Wainger type.

Fernando Cobos, Thomas Kühn, Tomas Schonbek (2006)

Revista Matemática Iberoamericana

Let Ω be a bounded domain in Rn and denote by idΩ the restriction operator from the Besov space Bpq1+n/p(Rn) into the generalized Lipschitz space Lip(1,-α)(Ω). We study the sequence of entropy numbers of this operator and prove that, up to logarithmic factors, it behaves asymptotically like ek(idΩ) ~ k-1/p if α > max (1 + 2/p + 1/q, 1/p). Our estimates improve previous results by Edmunds and Haroske.

Compactness properties of weighted summation operators on trees-the critical case

Mikhail Lifshits, Werner Linde (2011)

Studia Mathematica

The aim of this paper is to provide upper bounds for the entropy numbers of summation operators on trees in a critical case. In a recent paper [Studia Math. 202 (2011)] we elaborated a framework of weighted summation operators on general trees where we related the entropy of the operator to those of the underlying tree equipped with an appropriate metric. However, the results were left incomplete in a critical case of the entropy behavior, because this case requires much more involved techniques....

Compactness properties of weighted summation operators on trees

Mikhail Lifshits, Werner Linde (2011)

Studia Mathematica

We investigate compactness properties of weighted summation operators V α , σ as mappings from ℓ₁(T) into q ( T ) for some q ∈ (1,∞). Those operators are defined by ( V α , σ x ) ( t ) : = α ( t ) s t σ ( s ) x ( s ) , t ∈ T, where T is a tree with partial order ⪯. Here α and σ are given weights on T. We introduce a metric d on T such that compactness properties of (T,d) imply two-sided estimates for e ( V α , σ ) , the (dyadic) entropy numbers of V α , σ . The results are applied to concrete trees, e.g. moderately increasing, biased or binary trees and to weights with α(t)σ(t)...

Composition of (E,2)-summing operators

Andreas Defant, Mieczysław Mastyło (2003)

Studia Mathematica

The Banach operator ideal of (q,2)-summing operators plays a fundamental role within the theory of s-number and eigenvalue distribution of Riesz operators in Banach spaces. A key result in this context is a composition formula for such operators due to H. König, J. R. Retherford and N. Tomczak-Jaegermann. Based on abstract interpolation theory, we prove a variant of this result for (E,2)-summing operators, E a symmetric Banach sequence space.

Continuity of generalized inverses in Banach algebras

Steffen Roch, Bernd Silbermann (1999)

Studia Mathematica

The main topic of the paper is the continuity of several kinds of generalized inversion of elements in a Banach algebra with identity. We introduce the notion of asymptotic generalized invertibility and completely characterize sequences of elements with this property. Based on this result, we derive continuity criteria which generalize the well known criteria from operator theory.
