Quasicompact endomorphisms of commutative semiprime Banach algebras

Joel F. Feinstein, Herbert Kamowitz (2010)

Banach Center Publications

This paper is a continuation of our study of compact, power compact, Riesz, and quasicompact endomorphisms of commutative Banach algebras. Previously it has been shown that if B is a unital commutative semisimple Banach algebra with connected character space, and T is a unital endomorphism of B, then T is quasicompact if and only if the operators Tⁿ converge in operator norm to a rank-one unital endomorphism of B. In this note the discussion is extended in two ways: we discuss endomorphisms of commutative...

Quasiconformal mappings and exponentially integrable functions

Fernando Farroni, Raffaella Giova (2011)

Studia Mathematica

We prove that a K-quasiconformal mapping f:ℝ² → ℝ² which maps the unit disk onto itself preserves the space EXP() of exponentially integrable functions over , in the sense that u ∈ EXP() if and only if u f - 1 E X P ( ) . Moreover, if f is assumed to be conformal outside the unit disk and principal, we provide the estimate 1 / ( 1 + K l o g K ) ( | | u f - 1 | | E X P ( ) ) / ( | | u | | E X P ( ) ) 1 + K l o g K for every u ∈ EXP(). Similarly, we consider the distance from L in EXP and we prove that if f: Ω → Ω’ is a K-quasiconformal mapping and G ⊂ ⊂ Ω, then 1 / K ( d i s t E X P ( f ( G ) ) ( u f - 1 , L ( f ( G ) ) ) ) / ( d i s t E X P ( f ( G ) ) ( u , L ( G ) ) ) K for every u ∈ EXP(). We also prove that...

Quasinilpotent operators in operator Lie algebras II

Peng Cao (2009)

Studia Mathematica

In this paper, it is proved that the Banach algebra ( ) ¯ , generated by a Lie algebra ℒ of operators, consists of quasinilpotent operators if ℒ consists of quasinilpotent operators and ( ) ¯ consists of polynomially compact operators. It is also proved that ( ) ¯ consists of quasinilpotent operators if ℒ is an essentially nilpotent Engel Lie algebra generated by quasinilpotent operators. Finally, Banach algebras generated by essentially nilpotent Lie algebras are shown to be compactly quasinilpotent.

Quasinormal operators are hyperreflexive

Kamila Kliś, Marek Ptak (2005)

Banach Center Publications

We will prove the statement in the title. We also give a better estimate for the hyperreflexivity constant for an analytic Toeplitz operator.

Quotients of Banach Spaces with the Daugavet Property

Vladimir Kadets, Varvara Shepelska, Dirk Werner (2008)

Bulletin of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Mathematics

We consider a general concept of Daugavet property with respect to a norming subspace. This concept covers both the usual Daugavet property and its weak* analogue. We introduce and study analogues of narrow operators and rich subspaces in this general setting and apply the results to show that a quotient of L₁[0,1] by an ℓ₁-subspace need not have the Daugavet property. The latter answers in the negative a question posed to us by A. Pełczyński.

Quotients of L1 by reflexive subspaces.

Manuel González, Antonio Martínez-Abejón (1997)

Extracta Mathematicae

Here we present and example and some results suggesting that there is no infinite-dimensional reflexive subspace Z of L1 ≡ L1[0,1] such that the quotient L1/Z is isomorphic to a subspace of L1.

Radial maximal function characterizations for Hardy spaces on RD-spaces

Loukas Grafakos, Liguang Liu, Dachun Yang (2009)

Bulletin de la Société Mathématique de France

An RD-space 𝒳 is a space of homogeneous type in the sense of Coifman and Weiss with the additional property that a reverse doubling property holds. The authors prove that for a space of homogeneous type 𝒳 having “dimension” n , there exists a p 0 ( n / ( n + 1 ) , 1 ) such that for certain classes of distributions, the L p ( 𝒳 ) quasi-norms of their radial maximal functions and grand maximal functions are equivalent when p ( p 0 , ] . This result yields a radial maximal function characterization for Hardy spaces on 𝒳 .

Random walks on free products

M. Gabriella Kuhn (1991)

Annales de l'institut Fourier

Let G = * j = 1 q + 1 G n j + 1 be the product of q + 1 finite groups each having order n j + 1 and let μ be the probability measure which takes the value p j / n j on each element of G n j + 1 { e } . In this paper we shall describe the point spectrum of μ in C reg * ( G ) and the corresponding eigenspaces. In particular we shall see that the point spectrum occurs only for suitable choices of the numbers n j . We also compute the continuous spectrum of μ in C reg * ( G ) in several cases. A family of irreducible representations of G , parametrized on the continuous spectrum of μ ,...

Range inclusion results for derivations on noncommutative Banach algebras

Volker Runde (1993)

Studia Mathematica

Let A be a Banach algebra, and let D : A → A be a (possibly unbounded) derivation. We are interested in two problems concerning the range of D: 1. When does D map into the (Jacobson) radical of A? 2. If [a,Da] = 0 for some a ∈ A, is Da necessarily quasinilpotent? We prove that derivations satisfying certain polynomial identities map into the radical. As an application, we show that if [a,[a,[a,Da]]] lies in the prime radical of A for all a ∈ A, then D maps into the radical. This generalizes a result...

Rank α operators on the space C(T,X)

Dumitru Popa (2002)

Colloquium Mathematicae

For 0 ≤ α < 1, an operator U ∈ L(X,Y) is called a rank α operator if x τ α x implies Uxₙ → Ux in norm. We give some results on rank α operators, including an interpolation result and a characterization of rank α operators U: C(T,X) → Y in terms of their representing measures.
