On the space of maps inducing isomorphic connections

T. R. Ramadas (1982)

Annales de l'institut Fourier

Let ω be the universal connection on the bundle E U ( n ) B U ( n ) . Given a principal U ( n ) -bundle P M with connection A , we determine the homotopy type of the space of maps ϕ of M into B U ( n ) such that ( ϕ + E U ( n ) , ϕ + ω ) is isomorphic to ( P , A ) . Here ϕ + denotes pull-back.

On the torsion of linear higher order connections

Ivan Kolář (2003)

Open Mathematics

For a linear r-th order connection on the tangent bundle we characterize geometrically its integrability in the sense of the theory of higher order G-structures. Our main tool is a bijection between these connections and the principal connections on the r-th order frame bundle and the comparison of the torsions under both approaches.

On third order semiholonomic prolongation of a connection

Petr Vašík (2011)

Banach Center Publications

We recall several different definitions of semiholonomic jet prolongations of a fibered manifold and use them to derive some interesting properties of prolongation of a first order connection to a third order semiholonomic connection.

On torsion of a 3 -web

Alena Vanžurová (1995)

Mathematica Bohemica

A 3-web on a smooth 2 n -dimensional manifold can be regarded locally as a triple of integrable n -distributions which are pairwise complementary, [5]; that is, we can work on the tangent bundle only. This approach enables us to describe a 3 -web and its properties by invariant ( 1 , 1 ) -tensor fields P and B where P is a projector and B 2 = id. The canonical Chern connection of a web-manifold can be introduced using this tensor fields, [1]. Our aim is to express the torsion tensor T of the Chern connection through...

Only one of generalized gradients can be elliptic

Jerzy Kalina, Antoni Pierzchalski, Paweł Walczak (1997)

Annales Polonici Mathematici

Decomposing the space of k-tensors on a manifold M into the components invariant and irreducible under the action of GL(n) (or O(n) when M carries a Riemannian structure) one can define generalized gradients as differential operators obtained from a linear connection ∇ on M by restriction and projection to such components. We study the ellipticity of gradients defined in this way.

Order reduction of the Euler-Lagrange equations of higher order invariant variational problems on frame bundles

Ján Brajerčík (2011)

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

Let μ : F X X be a principal bundle of frames with the structure group Gl n ( ) . It is shown that the variational problem, defined by Gl n ( ) -invariant Lagrangian on J r F X , can be equivalently studied on the associated space of connections with some compatibility condition, which gives us order reduction of the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations.

Principal bundles, groupoids, and connections

Anders Kock (2007)

Banach Center Publications

We clarify in which precise sense the theory of principal bundles and the theory of groupoids are equivalent; and how this equivalence of theories, in the differentiable case, reflects itself in the theory of connections. The method used is that of synthetic differential geometry.
