Subcritical approximation of the Sobolev quotient and a related concentration result
We survey recent results on the mathematical modeling of nonconvex and nonsmooth contact problems arising in mechanics and engineering. The approach to such problems is based on the notions of an operator subdifferential inclusion and a hemivariational inequality, and focuses on three aspects. First we report on results on the existence and uniqueness of solutions to subdifferential inclusions. Then we discuss two classes of quasi-static hemivariational ineqaulities, and finally, we present ideas...
We consider the functional where is a bounded domain and is a convex function. Under general assumptions on , Crasta [Cr1] has shown that if admits a minimizer in depending only on the distance from the boundary of , then must be a ball. With some restrictions on , we prove that spherical symmetry can be obtained only by assuming that the minimizer has one level surface parallel to the boundary (i.e. it has only a level surface in common with the distance). We then discuss how these...
Existence and uniqueness theorem is established for a variational problem including Biot's model of consolidation of clay. The proof of existence is constructive and uses the compactness method. Error estimates for the approximate solution obtained by a method combining finite elements and Euler's backward method are given.
The scalar product of the FEM basis functions with non-intersecting supports vanishes. This property is generalized and the concept of local bilinear functional in a Hilbert space is introduced. The general form of such functionals in the spaces and is given.
We study the gradient flow for the relative entropy functional on probability measures over a riemannian manifold. To this aim we present a notion of a riemannian structure on the Wasserstein space. If the Ricci curvature is bounded below we establish existence and contractivity of the gradient flow using a discrete approximation scheme. Furthermore we show that its trajectories coincide with solutions to the heat equation.
The existence of a periodic solution of a nonlinear equation is proved. The theory developed may be used to prove the existence of a periodic solution of the variational formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations or the equations of magnetohydrodynamics. The proof of the main existence theorem is based on Rothe method in combination with the Galerkin method, using the Brouwer fixed point theorem.
