Polaroid type operators and compact perturbations

Chun Guang Li, Ting Ting Zhou (2014)

Studia Mathematica

A bounded linear operator T acting on a Hilbert space is said to be polaroid if each isolated point in the spectrum is a pole of the resolvent of T. There are several generalizations of the polaroid property. We investigate compact perturbations of polaroid type operators. We prove that, given an operator T and ε > 0, there exists a compact operator K with ||K|| < ε such that T + K is polaroid. Moreover, we characterize those operators for which a certain polaroid type property is stable under...

Polaroid type operators under perturbations

Pietro Aiena, Elvis Aponte (2013)

Studia Mathematica

A bounded operator T defined on a Banach space is said to be polaroid if every isolated point of the spectrum is a pole of the resolvent. The "polaroid" condition is related to the conditions of being left polaroid, right polaroid, or a-polaroid. In this paper we explore all these conditions under commuting perturbations K. As a consequence, we give a general framework from which we obtain, and also extend, recent results concerning Weyl type theorems (generalized or not) for T + K, where K is an...

Polynomials in the Volterra and Ritt operators

Dashdondog Tsedenbayar, Jaroslav Zemánek (2005)

Banach Center Publications

We continue the paper [Ts] on the boundedness of polynomials in the Volterra operator. This provides new ways of constructing power-bounded operators. It seems interesting to point out that a similar procedure applies to the operators satisfying the Ritt resolvent condition: compare Theorem 5 and Theorem 9 below.

Positive L¹ operators associated with nonsingular mappings and an example of E. Hille

Isaac Kornfeld, Wojciech Kosek (2003)

Colloquium Mathematicae

E. Hille [Hi1] gave an example of an operator in L¹[0,1] satisfying the mean ergodic theorem (MET) and such that supₙ||Tⁿ|| = ∞ (actually, | | T | | n 1 / 4 ). This was the first example of a non-power bounded mean ergodic L¹ operator. In this note, the possible rates of growth (in n) of the norms of Tⁿ for such operators are studied. We show that, for every γ > 0, there are positive L¹ operators T satisfying the MET with l i m n | | T | | / n 1 - γ = . Positivity in the theory of supercyclic operators

F. León-Saavedra, A. Piqueras-Lerena (2007)

Banach Center Publications

A bounded linear operator T defined on a Banach space X is said to be supercyclic if there exists a vector x ∈ X such that the projective orbit {λTⁿx : λ ∈ ℂ, n ∈ ℕ} is dense in X. The aim of this survey is to show the relationship between positivity and supercyclicity. This relationship comes from the so called Positive Supercyclicity Theorem. Throughout this exposition, interesting new directions and open problems will appear.

Potapov-Ginsburg Transformation and Functional Models of Non-Dissipative Operators

Zolotarev, Vladimir A., Hatamleh, Raéd (2009)

Serdica Mathematical Journal

2000 Mathematics Subject Classification: Primary 47A20, 47A45; Secondary 47A48.A relation between an arbitrary bounded operator A and dissipative operator A+, built by A in the following way A+ = A+ij*Q-j, where A-A* = ij*Jj, (J = Q+-Q- is involution), is studied. The characteristic functions of the operators A and A+ are expressed by each other using the known Potapov-Ginsburg linear-fractional transformations. The explicit form of the resolvent (A-lI)-1 is expressed by (A+-lI)-1 and (A+*-lI)-1...

Power-bounded elements and radical Banach algebras

Graham Allan (1997)

Banach Center Publications

Firstly, we give extensions of results of Gelfand, Esterle and Katznelson--Tzafriri on power-bounded operators. Secondly, some results and questions relating to power-bounded elements in the unitization of a commutative radical Banach algebra are discussed.

Powers and Logarithms

Przeworska-Rolewicz, Danuta (2004)

Fractional Calculus and Applied Analysis

There are applied power mappings in algebras with logarithms induced by a given linear operator D in order to study particular properties of powers of logarithms. Main results of this paper will be concerned with the case when an algebra under consideration is commutative and has a unit and the operator D satisfies the Leibniz condition, i.e. D(xy) = xDy + yDx for x, y ∈ dom D. Note that in the Number Theory there are well-known several formulae expressed by means of some combinations of powers...
