Four characterizations of scalar-type operators with spectrum in a half-line

Peter Vieten (1997)

Studia Mathematica

C 0 -scalar-type spectrality criterions for operators A whose resolvent set contains the negative reals are provided. The criterions are given in terms of growth conditions on the resolvent of A and the semigroup generated by A. These criterions characterize scalar-type operators on the Banach space X if and only if X has no subspace isomorphic to the space of complex null-sequences.

Functions of bounded variation on compact subsets of the plane

Brenden Ashton, Ian Doust (2005)

Studia Mathematica

A major obstacle in extending the theory of well-bounded operators to cover operators whose spectrum is not necessarily real has been the lack of a suitable variation norm applicable to functions defined on an arbitrary nonempty compact subset σ of the plane. In this paper we define a new Banach algebra BV(σ) of functions of bounded variation on such a set and show that the function-theoretic properties of this algebra make it better suited to applications in spectral theory than those used previously....

Generalized eigenfunction expansions and spectral decompositions

Mihai Putinar (1997)

Banach Center Publications

The paper relates several generalized eigenfunction expansions to classical spectral decomposition properties. From this perspective one explains some recent results concerning the classes of decomposable and generalized scalar operators. In particular a universal dilation theory and two different functional models for related classes of operators are presented.

Hille-Yosida type theorems for local regularized semigroups and local integrated semigroups

Sheng Wang Wang (2002)

Studia Mathematica

Motivated by a great deal of interest recently in operators that may not be densely defined, we deal with regularized semigroups and integrated semigroups that are either not exponentially bounded or not defined on [0,∞) and generated by closed operators which may not be densely defined. Some characterizations and related examples are presented. Our results are extensions of the corresponding results produced by other authors.

Isomorphic Schauder decompositions in certain Banach spaces

Vitalii Marchenko (2014)

Open Mathematics

We extend a theorem of Kato on similarity for sequences of projections in Hilbert spaces to the case of isomorphic Schauder decompositions in certain Banach spaces. To this end we use ℓψ-Hilbertian and ∞-Hilbertian Schauder decompositions instead of orthogonal Schauder decompositions, generalize the concept of an orthogonal Schauder decomposition to the case of Banach spaces and introduce the class of Banach spaces with Schauder-Orlicz decompositions. Furthermore, we generalize the notions of type,...

Isomorphisms of AC(σ) spaces

Ian Doust, Michael Leinert (2015)

Studia Mathematica

Analogues of the classical Banach-Stone theorem for spaces of continuous functions are studied in the context of the spaces of absolutely continuous functions introduced by Ashton and Doust. We show that if AC(σ₁) is algebra isomorphic to AC(σ₂) then σ₁ is homeomorphic to σ₂. The converse however is false. In a positive direction we show that the converse implication does hold if the sets σ₁ and σ₂ are confined to a restricted collection of compact sets, such as the set of all simple polygons.

Marcinkiewicz multipliers of higher variation and summability of operator-valued Fourier series

Earl Berkson (2014)

Studia Mathematica

Let f V r ( ) r ( ) , where, for 1 ≤ r < ∞, V r ( ) (resp., r ( ) ) denotes the class of functions (resp., bounded functions) g: → ℂ such that g has bounded r-variation (resp., uniformly bounded r-variations) on (resp., on the dyadic arcs of ). In the author’s recent article [New York J. Math. 17 (2011)] it was shown that if is a super-reflexive space, and E(·): ℝ → () is the spectral decomposition of a trigonometrically well-bounded operator U ∈ (), then over a suitable non-void open interval of r-values, the condition...
