Isoperimetric and Stable Sets for Log-Concave Perturbations of Gaussian Measures

César Rosales (2014)

Analysis and Geometry in Metric Spaces

Let be an open half-space or slab in ℝn+1 endowed with a perturbation of the Gaussian measure of the form f (p) := exp(ω(p) − c|p|2), where c > 0 and ω is a smooth concave function depending only on the signed distance from the linear hyperplane parallel to ∂ Ω. In this work we follow a variational approach to show that half-spaces perpendicular to ∂ Ω uniquely minimize the weighted perimeter in Ω among sets enclosing the same weighted volume. The main ingredient of the proof is the characterization...

Wyatt Boyer, Bryan Brown, Gregory R. Chambers, Alyssa Loving, Sarah Tammen (2016)

Analysis and Geometry in Metric Spaces

We show that the unique isoperimetric regions in Rn with density rp for n ≥ 3 and p > 0 are balls with boundary through the origin.

Minimal surfaces in pseudohermitian geometry

Jih-Hsin Cheng, Jenn-Fang Hwang, Andrea Malchiodi, Paul Yang (2005)

Annali della Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa - Classe di Scienze

We consider surfaces immersed in three-dimensional pseudohermitian manifolds. We define the notion of (p-)mean curvature and of the associated (p-)minimal surfaces, extending some concepts previously given for the (flat) Heisenberg group. We interpret the p-mean curvature not only as the tangential sublaplacian of a defining function, but also as the curvature of a characteristic curve, and as a quantity in terms of calibration geometry. As a differential equation, the p-minimal surface equation...

Minimising convex combinations of low eigenvalues

Mette Iversen, Dario Mazzoleni (2014)

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

We consider the variational problem         inf{αλ1(Ω) + βλ2(Ω) + (1 − α − β)λ3(Ω) | Ω open in ℝn, |Ω| ≤ 1}, for α, β ∈ [0, 1], α + β ≤ 1, where λk(Ω) is the kth eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian acting in L2(Ω) and |Ω| is the Lebesgue measure of Ω. We investigate for which values of α, β every minimiser is connected.

Multi-phase structural optimization via a level set method

G. Allaire, C. Dapogny, G. Delgado, G. Michailidis (2014)

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

We consider the optimal distribution of several elastic materials in a fixed working domain. In order to optimize both the geometry and topology of the mixture we rely on the level set method for the description of the interfaces between the different phases. We discuss various approaches, based on Hadamard method of boundary variations, for computing shape derivatives which are the key ingredients for a steepest descent algorithm. The shape gradient obtained for a sharp interface involves jump...

Natural pseudodistances between closed surfaces

Pietro Donatini, Patrizio Frosini (2007)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

Let us consider two closed surfaces , 𝒩 of class C 1 and two functions ϕ : , ψ : 𝒩 of class C 1 , called measuring functions. The natural pseudodistance d between the pairs ( , ) , ( 𝒩 , ψ ) is defined as the infimum of Θ ( f ) : = max P | ϕ ( P ) ψ ( f ( P ) ) | as f varies in the set of all homeomorphisms from onto 𝒩 . In this paper we prove that the natural pseudodistance equals either | c 1 c 2 | , 1 2 | c 1 c 2 | , or 1 3 | c 1 c 2 | , where c 1 and c 2 are two suitable critical values of the measuring functions. This shows that a previous relation between the natural pseudodistance and critical values...

Numerical minimization of eigenmodes of a membrane with respect to the domain

Édouard Oudet (2004)

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

In this paper we introduce a numerical approach adapted to the minimization of the eigenmodes of a membrane with respect to the domain. This method is based on the combination of the Level Set method of S. Osher and J.A. Sethian with the relaxed approach. This algorithm enables both changing the topology and working on a fixed regular grid.

Numerical realization of a fictitious domain approach used in shape optimization. Part I: Distributed controls

Jana Daňková, Jaroslav Haslinger (1996)

Applications of Mathematics

We deal with practical aspects of an approach to the numerical realization of optimal shape design problems, which is based on a combination of the fictitious domain method with the optimal control approach. Introducing a new control variable in the right-hand side of the state problem, the original problem is transformed into a new one, where all the calculations are performed on a fixed domain. Some model examples are presented.

Numerical simulations for nodal domains and spectral minimal partitions

Virginie Bonnaillie-Noël, Bernard Helffer, Gregory Vial (2010)

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

We recall here some theoretical results of Helffer et al. [Ann. Inst. H. Poincaré Anal. Non Linéaire (2007) doi:10.1016/j.anihpc.2007.07.004] about minimal partitions and propose numerical computations to check some of their published or unpublished conjectures and exhibit new ones.

Numerical solution of the pressing devices shape optimization problem in the glass industry

Petr Salač (2018)

Applications of Mathematics

In this contribution, we present the problem of shape optimization of the plunger cooling which comes from the forming process in the glass industry. We look for a shape of the inner surface of the insulation barrier located in the plunger cavity so as to achieve a constant predetermined temperature on the outward surface of the plunger. A rotationally symmetric system, composed of the mould, the glass piece, the plunger, the insulation barrier and the plunger cavity, is considered. The state problem...

On a conjecture by Auerbach

Nicola Fusco, A. Pratelli (2011)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

In 1938 Herman Auerbach published a paper where he showed a deep connection between the solutions of the Ulam problem of floating bodies and a class of sets studied by Zindler, which are the planar sets whose bisecting chords all have the same length. In the same paper he conjectured that among Zindler sets the one with minimal area, as well as with maximal perimeter, is the so-called “Auerbach triangle”. We prove this conjecture.
